A Flock Of Seagulls – Space Age Love Song (US 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

REQUEST

“Space Age Love Song” is a 1982 single released by the British band, A Flock of Seagulls. It was their fourth single. Lead guitarist Paul Reynolds remarked on their 1984 video album “Through the Looking Glass” that he thought of the song’s title. He said that the band wrote and recorded it, but couldn’t come up with the title. He suggested “Space Age Love Song” because he thought it sounded like a space age love song. His idea stuck as the song’s permanent title.

“Space Age Love Song” peaked at No. 30 in the US Billboard Chart, No. 31 in New Zealand, No. 34 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 68 in Australia.

The 7″ Edit is about twenty seconds or so shorter than the album version. This version has a shorter intro and to my knowledge has not appeared on CD most compilations use the 3:47 album version.

Hi Paul…I hope your partner’s mother makes a good recovery. I came across this post of A Flock of Seagulls hit “Space Age Love Song”. I don’t know if you are aware that there is a second version of the 7″ single with a different edit. I bought one of the first pressings of it back in 1983 and still have the record. When I listened to the version you posted, something didn’t sound right about the edit…it was not how I remembered the single version to be. So I delved into my own, long stored away, 45s and found… Read more »

This reminds me to go thru their Best Of CD, I got it somewhere, some great songs on it, other the just I Ran, which is the most exposed and mostly used on 80s compilations.

“Windows” and “Lost Control” and “Living In Heaven” are all awesome B-sides from this era. I like “Living In Heaven” the best… it’s got a great beat, and the creepy tone is very early AFOS.

Great b-side! Never heard that before. Should have become an A-side.

Yes! Love this song! Thanks for posting the 7″ Edit, not sure I’ve heard it before. Didn’t know it even existed.

Paul, this is an awesome post. My second-favorite song by my favorite early 80s band. One of the highlights of my young life was jumping on stage to sing the chorus to “Telecommunication” with Mike Score at a small club in 1986.

Welcome back Paul!! I trust you and yours had a great Thanksgiving holiday. I enjoyed mine very much and thankfully, after having four days off, we have you giving us a great song to start our Monday!! I’ve always loved this song by this group. Actually, I prefer this one over their great “I Ran” record. And again, it’s cool to have a version that’s a bit different than the album version. You’re so excellent to share these treasures with us.

Well, have a great day and Cyber-Monday shopping spree.

Best,

Jeff
