The Christians – Harvest For The World (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

a-front

In the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday a day that we come together with family and friends to give thanks for our many blessings. I thought this song would be very fitting for Thanksgiving and the times that we are living in. Let’s all try to be a little kinder and more tolerant of each other. I am so thankful to have all of you sharing this journey with me. I will be spending time with family this week and will return on Monday November 28. – DjPaulT

“Harvest for the World” is a 1976 single originally released by American musical group The Isley Brothers.

The socially conscious single was covered in 1988 by the UK band The Christians with all proceeds going to charity. The video for the track was an animation, created by four leading animation companies, including Aardman Animations. The video won several awards, and the single reached number 8 in the UK singles chart, their sixth consecutive British Top 40 hit.

The song was also covered by Duran Duran spin-off group Power Station for their debut album with lead vocals by guitarist Andy Taylor.

The b-side “Small Axe” is a cover version originally recorded by Bob Marley in 1973.

Plenty cover versions of this song made, but none can beat the Isley Brothers original.
This would have been a very good version, but the predominant, over loud, crappy snare just ruins the song! How could they release such terrible sounding mixes? And yes, the CD-Maxi sounds the same 🙁

Great version. Always a fan of Forgotten town, Hooverville and When the fingers point. Do you have any more of The Christians, Paul?

Paul… Happy Turkey! Or, as they say, “gobble ’til ya wobble.” 🙂
I haven’t listened to this yet (downloading as I type) but I’m thinking the shorter version on the B side might be the same as was released on the 1988 Summer Olympics album?

Harvest For The World is a great song, even though I preferred The Power Station’s 1985 version.

Another Excellent post Paul.

Great song, great cover. I loved Forgotton Town, Born Again and Ideal World as well. After that, they drifted out of my focus, I´m afraid.

Thank you, Paul.
