Yvonne Elliman – Love Pains (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

DISCO FRIDAY!

“Love Pains” is a dance song written by Michael Price, Dan Walsh and Steve Barri and originally recorded by Yvonne Elliman in 1979.

“Love Pains” was a hit for Elliman in 1979, reaching #34 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart as well as #75 on Hot Dance Club Play, and #33 on the Adult Contemporary chart. “Love Pains” would be Elliman’s final chart single, Elliman’s extended hiatus from the music business commencing soon after the release of the track’s parent album Yvonne which was the last release of newly recorded music by Elliman until her 2004 EP Simple Needs.

In 1982, Moby Dick Records were in the process of re-releasing remixes of previous hits for their Gold Standard label when Rob Kimbel presented them with a remix of “Love Pains.” The remix was released as a single and sales for the Moby Dick 12″ single surpassed sales of the original record.

Wonderful song but never really liked this edit. I just (to my ears badly) cuts to a repeat of the intro, then slaps in a “Oh no” a bit more of the intro and then repeats the ending.

I am perfectly happy with the 5:30 version 🙂

Hi Paul,
I have the Rams Horn release of this, which at first glance would seem to include this mix. Such a great song – love Liza and Hazell’s versions too.

Paul, Thanks for this GEM. I do have the 1979 “Yvonne” album from which the single “Love Pains” was lifted from. Your mention of the history of this 12″ post the songs original release in 1979 is interesting. Maybe the failure of this track to chart strongly was the Disco backlash that was occurring at the time with this very dance friendly track having synth-pop and hi-energy foundations – possibly why it charted better three years later in ’82. Would be great to see Yvonne’s RSO albums re-released on CD at some point, but don’t hold out too much hope.… Read more »

I thought about the Disco backlash factor too. While it may have explained the Hot 100 performance, it certainly can’t account for the Club Play chart position. After all, the Club Play chart ranks songs that are most played by sampled DJs in the clubs all over the US.
A total mystery!

This remix from Moby Dick again made Casey Jones’ top 200 HI-NRG songs of the 80s. The various cover versions by Liza Minnelli, Hazell Dean, Viola Wills, Obsession, Kelly Marie, etc, only proves the timelessness of the melody and lyrics. Just a beautiful song, all around. Great choice for a rip, Paul – thank you!

This is a mighty fine example of your Disco Friday spirit, Paul!
Lyrics of hurt and pain set to a Disco Rhythm and Hi-NRG Beat.
I love this remix of Love Pains and the song is one of my favourite Disco tunes ever! Liza did it justice, but it’s another baffling case of chart performance here.
#34 on the Hot 100 is dismal but #75 on the Club Play is certainly unacceptable! Are the 70s club DJs not playing this fabulous tune enough back in 1979!!!???
TGIF Paul and Thanks for setting the perfect Disco mood for the weekend!

Thanks Paul. I know I’ve mostly heard the Pet Shop Boys-produced version by Liza Minelli (another possible future Paul rip?), and it’s nice to get reacquainted with the original disco roots of the track.

Awesome! Thank you so much. I’ve been in love with this song since Liza remade it on her “Results” CD in 1989.
