Wham! – Last Christmas (UK 7″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1984

NEW 2021 Transfer!
NEW Meticulous Restoration!
NEW First time in 24bit Flac!

Originally posted December 3, 2018

For those that may have missed this one the first time around I have given this record a fresh new transfer. Since I originally recorded this record in 2018 I have made many upgrades to my gear, and wanted to give the record the best possible transfer that I could. This recording is also being presented in 24bit FLAC Hi-Res Audio for the first time.

In addition I have also newly scanned the artwork.

“Last Christmas” is a song by English pop duo Wham!, released on Epic Records in December 1984, on a double A-side with “Everything She Wants”. It was written and produced by George Michael.

The song reached number one in Slovenia and Sweden and number two in seven countries including Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway and United Kingdom. Wham! donated all of their royalties to the Ethiopian famine.

**This U.K. 7″ pressing contains The early mix and vocal of “Last Christmas” recorded in August 1984, which has never been released on CD or digitally. Everything She Wants (Album Version) is the B side according to the record label. However, Last Christmas has been mis-pressed on both sides. Track time is listed as 4:24 on the record label the actual duration is 4:32.

My favorite song of theirs and it brings such great memories of study hall and a teacher who was the inspiration for Mario from Donkey Kong!
This song owned those couple of years and even the metal/punk kids would tap their feet to this one.

In 1984 Slovenia didn’t exist as an independent entity and there were no Slovenia chart lists of any kind. If it was no.1 it could have been no. 1 in YUGOSLAVIA and Yugoslavia only. Please correct it in respect and memory of one great state, that, in meantime, ceased to exist in a horrible way.

Last Christmas was the biggest selling UK single never to reach number one (in the pre-streaming UK Top 40 chart).

…undoubtedly kept from the top spot by that terrible, ill-conceived sleeve.

Thank you. I’m loving this early version. I used to play this all the time when released. I am pleased this was re-recorded as it is very flat and lazy sounding in places. The newly recorded version has so much more life and sparkle to it. My files show this was uploaded in 24bit in 2018, how time flies. I can’t believe we lost George FIVE years ago. Still so very sad indeed. Lots of exciting things coming from George’s team in 2022, so his memory will live on. Many thanks for sharing the music in 2021 and happy New… Read more »

Thank ever so much! And how apropos for so many reasons, sadly (George Michael R.I.P.)! But his beautiful voice and music lives with us and thank you very much for sharing this, especially for those of us who would otherwise be unable to appreciate and enjoy turntable gems like this one.

Thanks again!
And Safe & Happy Holiday Wishes to You, Paul & All Who Enjoy & Support Your Excellent Turntablism & Your Blog!!

Love this song and the happy memories it stands for me. It’s also a tad bitter-sweet too as George Michael passed away a few years ago on the holiday. I miss him so much. Thank you, Paul. I know how much you loved him too.
