Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988
“Wishing I Was Lucky” is the debut single of Scottish band Wet Wet Wet, released as the lead single from their first album, Popped in Souled Out (1987). Recorded for £600 in Edinburgh, it was released in March 1987 and was their first hit, peaking at No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 10 in Ireland. The following year, the song reached the top 20 in Belgium and the Netherlands, while in the United States, “Wishing I Was Lucky” became the group’s first of two songs to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 58.
Tommy Cunningham later said of the song: “I was in a queue in a chip shop in Glasgow when it came on Radio Clyde. I felt like shouting to everybody, ‘That’s me and my mates!’ It was an incredible feeling I’ve not forgotten.” Marti Pellow recorded an acoustic, solo version of the song for inclusion on his 2002 album, Marti Pellow Sings the Hits of Wet Wet Wet & Smile.

Love this song …. Thank you
A great track that should have been a bigger hit, and a band who should have been big in the US as in the rest of the world. I worked the music video to the pools back in the day, as well as another “lucky” song, ‘Til Tuesday’s “(Believed You Were) Lucky” that was released the same year. Uni pretty much stopped working Wet Wet Wet after this single, even though the were later handed their biggest hit, the cover of The Troggs’ “Love Is All Around”. It was #1, #2 or top 10 in 20 countries yet somehow managed… Read more »

Thank you for the new post and you excellent processing work on your rips, back at those days was one of my favorites to mix with I don’t wanna be a hero of Johnny Hates Jazz.
You’re welcome, Dino 🙂
I love it when you post a ‘new’ gem to my ears! I might have heard it on the radio back in the day, but thanks for unearthing it in pristine quality!! Great production and very catchy… Fit in perfectly with the zeitgeist at the time – Johnny Hates Jazz, Breathe, Rick Astley, etc. Thank you Paul!
You’re welcome, Retro Hound. I love Wet Wet Wet. It is very underrated 🙂
Thank you Paul.
You’re welcome, Jason 🙂
Thank you, Paul for this 12-inch. I am not too familiar with their discography like I am with other artists, but this looks cool.
Many thanks!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff 🙂
This is great. I love Wet Wet Wet so thank you.
I wish they would release more super deluxe editions, yet they would need cooperation from Marti which I feel he wouldn’t give.
Hopefully you will upload more WWW one day.
Thank you, FluffyPaws 🙂
