Unpacking files Pleas Read!

Hey everyone,

Hope you are doing well this weekend. Some of you are having trouble unpacking files lately. The reason for this may be because this year I updated to the latest version of WinRar for Windows which I use to archive all of the files for download on BTG. In order to fix the problem, you may need to update your software to a newer version to be compatible with mine. I use a Windows operating system so I am not sure what is available for MAC users RaRLab, WinZip and Unarchiver come to mind, however, a quick Google search of how to open RAR files on a MAC should provide the answer. If you are using Windows you can also use a free program called 7 Zip which I have heard works well to unpack many file-formats including RAR files.

Also when using the MEGA link to download my 24bit files just enter the password when asked to “Enter Decryption Password” the file and you will be able to download from there. Anytime you download a file make sure you let the download finish completely or the file will not work. Information such as Password and much more are located in the FAQ section here on BTG I would advise you to give it a read if you have not already.

Lastly, let’s try to be kind to one another I look at Burning The Ground as my home I would expect people to show respect in my home so I expect it here as well. Disinformation and nastiness will not be tolerated.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Take care and stay safe.

-Paul

Had a problem unpacking with my older version of 7zip, but I downloaded the newer version and the problem went away.
Thanks DJ Paul!

I’m using the Archive Manager in Linux but I think I may have installed a rar plugin for it to work. I recall it needed something because it could read them okay but couldn’t decrypt them, which was bizarre, as things like archives don’t tend to read at all without an exact plug in for it. In any case I’d ready like a feature where you can set password for a URL so it can automate the unpacking for me. 🙂

I haven’t used WinRar in years. Instead, I installed the freeware 7-Zip (version 19, last version for Windows 7, 32 bit) at the beginning of 2019. Has (at least with the burningtheground files) no problems so far.

I find Free Extract RAR Frog to be very user-friendly and you can set up defaults as well as save passwords for future use. Get it from https://www.philippwinterberg.com/software/free_rar_extract_frog_update.php though you will have to click through to the CNET download site.

unrar for Linux works too! 😉 Thanks for doing these! I tried doing this about 10 years ago and it was very time consuming. So I really appreciate all that you do to preserve these gems.

There may be an error when downloading 24bit files in MEGA.
However, that may have something to do with the time of day when the Internet connection is busy and the fact that I am using Windows XP (Windows 7 is fine).
It’s not your fault, but I’ll let you know just in case.
Unzipping the files, I haven’t had any problems with 7-zip (19.00).
Many thanks!!!

Dear Paul, your reference is very good, I personally have had no problems downloading the files. On the other hand, you created this space to share and enjoy the music of those years, therefore we must respect the space that you have given us. Cheers

Found a cool little program called Peazip for unpacking, if you are on a MS box, and it is faster than 7zip with controls regarding priority of system resources.
Laugh out loud and install another program if it asks for some membership or private info and do not send money!

For Mac users, I can inform that Stuffit Expander does not work anymore unpacking the .rar files. I now use Unarchiver and that works just fine.

Hi Paul,
I use a MacBook Pro and The Unarchiver and have never had any issues. I unpacked both Andrew Ridgely files. Hope this helps other Mac users that are having issues.
Thanks for all you do for us. Stay safe!

Paul, it is your site and therefore your choice, but I am surprised by the politicising of BTG with your pro-Mask and pro-COVID agenda. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but it is not the only perspective and this is happening all over the internet. Anyone who questions the narrative is abused, silenced and labelled disrespectful. Plus a lot of other less repeatable things. I am sad to see BTG bring this into the world of 80s music and bring discord to the community of fans who have enjoyed your efforts for so many years. People should be allowed… Read more »

To be clear, scientific fact is not opinion. Nonetheless, all the best to you.

Science is not infallible, or always to be trusted. But this is not the place to go into it at length. Which is my point.

Eric I think it is you who is bringing an inappropriate agenda to the blog. Covid is a fact and not an opinion. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, to coin a term used here (UK), a ‘covidiot’! Paul is doing what any sane responsible person/organisation/business would do right now…showing solidarity with the necessary messages around the reality we are living in right now. That said it’s Paul’s blog. He says he feels it is part of his home. So he is asking you to respect his home. He showed his support for Pete during the election. As he may well… Read more »

Indeed. “Agree with us, or get out”. Sad but there we are. I made my observation as respectfully as I could, but I am done here. The blog used to be about enjoying 80s music, not to be told what to think and do with our lives. Those who have a different take on “the science” and the “facts” are not welcome. Paul has chosen to make a very public stance on this, which he can do. But I do not visit and donate to be treated that way, or be confronted with photos of him wearing a mask (I… Read more »

Thanks for posting this Paul, this may help those having problems. I myself use 7zip to unpack the files, and have never had any trouble. And, yes, let’s keep it respectful everyone. Remember, this is a great FREE resource, and community, and it would be a sad day indeed, if it had to end due to the disrespectful few.
Keep well everyone, and thank you so much for everything that you do here Paul ❤️

I’d also like to thank you, Paul, for all your efforts. It’s clearly a labor of love!! I hope you know it does not go unnoticed by the majority of us who benefit from your generosity!!!
