BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
NEW 2021 Transfer!
Meticulously Remastered!
Originally posted July 14, 2012
“Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” is the second single from Lament, Ultravox’s seventh studio album, released in 1984.
The single effectively put Ultravox back on the map, peaking at no. 3 in the UK Singles Chart, and reaching the top 10 in several European countries. The song also entered the Australian and Canadian Top 75 but failed to chart in the US.
The Steve Thompson USA “Extended” Mix is unique to this North American release. The North American release also includes “One Small Day (Club Version)” which had previously been released as the first single from Lament. It peaked at no. 27 in the UK Singles Chart.
The cover states both titles as being “Special Re-Mix”. These mixes do exist, but not on this US release.

Paul, Have you been reading my mind, and looking into my record collection. I have been on a massive Ultravox kick since last december. There is a music forum called Steve Hoffman, where somebody started an Ultravox track by track album by album discussion. I only started when they got past the John Foxx era, which i do not like at all. I only paid attention to Ultravox when midge ure joined them in 1980, with the massive Vienna album (which is currently enjoying its 40th anniversary, with a massive super deluxe edition). I heard them in 1984, and actually… Read more »
Excellent, haven’t listened to Ultravox in a while. Love the bass lines in the last part of “One Small Day”, so danceable. Thanks for this gem!
This is one of those era defining tracks, not just a band defining one, or even for Midge himself. Like U2’s Where The Streets Have No Name, Hubert KaH’s So Many People, or even Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire, it spoke to the ever-constant fear or war and death that we’ve become so inured to, and shone a spotlight on the madness of such a notion, all in a remixable top 40 radio track.
Like the others, this is a song to listen to often, to think about, and let it change you.
Thanks Paul. A Great song and another top class week of posts.
Another great week on BTG – thank you Paul.
Love your recent posts. This is the point in time where my appreciation for new music developed. Once somewhat educated I went back and investigated what came before. Please stay healthy and keep your loved ones the same. Thanks as always!
I joined the Ultravox fandom quite late but the more intensively. I love the Lament album and collected all the 12-Inches from it, including the title track and Heart Of The Country. This US 12-inch here I only got to know by your first upload. For my taste neither the US nor the standard 12-inch versions of “Dancing” are very good. I love them, mind you, but they just could and should have been better. The wonderful “One Small Day” has seen so many remixes, too, but I still prefer the original 12-inch a-side which maybe maybe may be found… Read more »
Hi Song and Dance, happy birthday (belated). I will take issue with your views on the Ultravox mixes. To me their are the pinnacle of a band at their height. As ‘lament’ was burned into my memory with hundreds of plays when it came out. I loved each and every remix, especially the super long 8,9,10 minute plus ones they would put out, And ‘white china’ had the best ones, which weren’t available on vinyl until the somewhat recent ‘remasters’, and ‘extended’ campaigns [not counting the razormaid ones]. Anyways, some people thought they were too long, or too repetitive, but… Read more »
You have been on fire this week Paul, really burning it to the ground!! Love Ultravox and can’t wait to listen.
Have a great weekend Paul and everyone else in Cyberspace!!!
I hope you, Song And Dance had a nice birthday week!!!
Jeff
You´re too kind to me, Jeff. I took two day´s paid vacation on Monday and Tuesday and my girl and I had two wonderful days. The weather here is a blast – six days in a row with more than 20 degrees Centigrade, that´s 68 Fahrenheit and more. Unheard of in historic weather data over here. I live about 51 degrees north, on your side of the Atlantic that´s as high up as Calgary, Canada. So these temperatures are not normal at all. Anyway, a lovely day. Thanks again, Jeff. s´n´d
