“I Eat Cannibals” was the debut single by British new wave group Toto Coelo (renamed Total Coelo in the US). The single reached No. 8 in the UK Singles Chart and was also a hit in many other countries, including South Africa where it was named the seventeenth biggest selling single of 1983, peaking at No. 3, while it only got as high as No. 66 in the U.S. in early 1983.

The solid drum sound that underpins the single was provided by session drummer Peter Boita. Boita received a demo cassette from producer Barry Blue and proceeded to score out a drum part that fitted the song. He programmed his Linndrum Computer with the basic drumbeat that is heard throughout the record. Boita also used this same technique on the B-side of the follow-up single, “Mucho Macho”, but, apart from a few television appearances, the single failed to make much impression on the charts.

Banging on a chop-chop!!
One of the greatest songs of the 80s! How did I miss you post this?!!

BTW, the tags for Part 1 are mislabelled as Track 2/Part 2. 🙂

Thanks Paul – I don’t know anybody else that even knows they did anything except this song. 😀

(Oh, P.S: There’s an error in the ID3 tags on the MP3 version; “Extended Version Part 1” and “Part 2” both say “Part 2” in the track name, and have “02” in the Track # field. The filenames are correct; it’s just the ID3 tags that are wrong.)

Holy crow… I remember listening to this on the radio, but I’d completely forgotten about it until now! I’m definitely gonna throw this into a playlist and see if anyone actually remembers it… 😀

Thanks, Paul. I first heard of TC — and so many other bands you cover — well after the fact via the Living In Oblivion series. Good stuff. Appreciate the work you put in meticulously recording!

This rip has much less distortion on the sibilants (e.g. in the short version’s “I like spice, tasty and nice”) than your earlier rip. Everything’s just a touch more crisp, too. The new stylus makes a real difference. Thanks for this!

Thank you, thank you. I’m all aflutter hoping this theme continues tomorrow and you share “Dracula’s Tango!”

You, sir, are simply the best. And your extensive TC and Toni Basil posts make me want to do more research into the mysterious world of Radialchoice Records and their prescient attempts to be a video-oriented record label. Thank you.

I have so many memories of this record Paul. And to have it in your own specially AWESOME fidelity, it’s better than it ever was. I guess when I was much younger, and a lot more lustier, the sexual connotations of this record thrilled me. Maybe I made too much of the “eating” metaphor, but it always stimulated me. I love sexual innuendo and would seek out records that fit my mood. Thanks for bringing this back for the sentimentality it creates in me. You’re the best Paul!

Love it…! (Has a real novelty charm to it).

And yes to a comment yesterday about “Hey Rajah” a 12″ would of been nice.

Thanks as always for the rip, Paul.. 🙂
