“The Runner” is a 1978 Disco single by American female vocal group, formed in 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The Three Degrees.
In 1978, The Three Degrees signed to Ariola Records in Europe and the US and began working with Giorgio Moroder, who had become famous as a disco producer following his work with Donna Summer. “the Runner” was the third single taken from the album New Dimensions the single peaked at #10 on the UK singles chart.

Aaah, I was boping for a Diana Ross post….
But this one is great too of course. I think it’s their best single from their Ariola era. Strong production, great vocal arrangement and a wonderful extended remix, apart from one tiny flaw which irritates me personally: an out of synch harmony in the beginning of the song.

What do you mean by out of sync harmony? I recently listened to both the extended versions (original band version and the remix) and never noticed myself. As a dj/mixer i am curious now.

Maybe Moroder did it on purpose I frankly didn’t notic eit either.
Ahaa, now i see what you mean. I am used to those kind of out-of-syncs. With the 70’s analog recordings it sometimes happens the drummer or bassplayer speeds up during the recording taking the whole track with it. When cutting and pasting vocals or solo’s from one part over the other, one has to choose where the sync should vary. Sometimes the little variations are done to create a tension for the listener or dancer (it worked – ha! ) or for the purpose of not having all frequencies emphasize on a single spot and creating a little trouble for… Read more »
I strongly feel it’s some sort of an error (or else: a bad decision), because if you are in the mixing process, you are fully aware what you’re doing: or you do them all in synch or all out of synch (I reckon).
I have the intention one day to create a new version with the 2 out of synch parts corrected.

I recognize the freaky (sorry :-p) ambition to correct a masterpiece.. I get a little jumpy sometimes to at moments, just not this one. For me it is the sloppy drumwork on old intro’s, my ableton comes in very handy to quantize by hand 🙂
Well, what REALLY freaks me out are bad – terrible sounding – edits. Aaahhh…
You mean, like the hatchet job they did when they edited Chicago’s “Make Me Smile” into the 7-inch single cut? 😀 That one must’ve been handed off to some intern at four in the afternoon on a Friday, or something, because whoever butchered that mix didn’t even try to make any of the edit points match. (I mean, granted, it was 1970, and they were still having to do those kinds of edits by physically splicing the tape, but still…)
