O.M.D. – Tesla Girls (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

A. Front

“Tesla Girls” is a song by British band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released as the third single from their 1984 album, Junk Culture. It charted at #21 in the UK and Ireland, and #33 in the Netherlands. Although only moderately successful on the charts, it became one of the group’s biggest club hits.

Musician and writer Kim Wilde slammed “Tesla Girls” on release, calling it “inane and monotonous”. Critic Dave Thompson, in a retrospective review for AllMusic described the song as “electrifying”, adding: “The clever lyrics are almost as smart as the music pounding across this song. Cutting-edge scratch production drives the sound, slamming beats fuel the fire, and an irrepressible melody and ‘no, no, no’ chorus all conspire to turn ‘Tesla Girls’ anthemic, while the soaring synths set the blood pumping…a quintessential dance number.” Colleague Ned Raggett wrote: “‘Tesla Girls’ is easily the group’s high point when it comes to sheer sprightly pop…witty lines about science and romance [are] wedded to a great melody (prefaced by a brilliant, hyperactive intro).”

The single performed more poorly than expected mainly due to a lack of media coverage. Controversy surrounded the song’s video, which some in the media had slammed as ‘sexist’. In fact, the video, which was largely Andy McCluskey’s idea, was lampooning the style of American music videos the band was pressured into making by Virgin Records in the hope of breaking into the U.S. market. He believed that American music videos relied heavily on attractive young female models posing and preening in front of the camera. While few got the joke, a furor did develop. It was the last time Virgin Records interfered with the style of videos of the band’s singles.

The song featured in the 1985 film Weird Science.

This is one of my top five fave OMD tracks, and the only one I got laughed at when playing for friends! It’s a bit…well “cute” is one way to put it. Far more of an “example” of that aspect of the 80s. It’s as fun as hell though…even if I stick to headphones.

Finally got to playing these. Never heard the mixes before (tracks 1 and 2) and i think they’re good mixes. The other 12″ mix has been available on CD for quite some time. Wasn’t even aware these ones existed though. Any more OMD would be appreciated (you’ve obviously mentioned more are on the way). Look forward to them. Saw them live 3-4 times all since the comeback. They are absolutely amazing live and i love the two comeback albums so much. Very highly recommended

Oh, wow! Never heard this remix before. It’s a weird one, to be sure. A really strange dub mix of the era. Do you have any information on its origins, the remixer, etc?

And that “instrumental version” is more than a little weird too.

By the way – do you check that your promo 12″es are up on discogs.com? It’s a great place to gather everything. I find it approximately infallible as a record collector, and enormously useful when I’m writing bands up for Wikipedia.

Paul, I flipped for this when it was first released. I, like others, really enjoy the original version. I didn’t understand the reasoning behind this mix, as the “electricity” of the original was all but zapped out. The remix service Razormaid! did my favorite mix of this, based off the original version. That mix is the definitive dance mix of this song. Your hair will stand on end because of its excitement. Paul, please know that I loved how you mastered this remix though. Amazing stuff soundwise, as always. And at least it has the video mix on it so… Read more »

I love OMD… It would be great if you could get the “(Forever) Live And Die” Remix, there is a 12″ that includes 7″ version, extended version and the song “This Town”.
Also “secrets” will be appreciated!
It’s the first time I donate for a site, and it totally worth it so far…

Thankyouverymuch!

O.M.D. have always been a favorite of mine. I saw them live at a small venue in Buffalo, NY in 1985… Andy McClusky went nuts doing his “dad dance” while singing this one. Great energy for great times! I never had the promo of this, so thanks for it and as always for continuing your fine job on the blog.

This is a delightful surprise Paul. Back in 1984 when we were merely high school students we used to laughed at the song singing ‘testicals, testicals’, since English is not our Native language. LOL!! ~ chwee

Hi, I didn’t know this song, even though I like OMD . I found it very colourful, as the great record sleeve. But what I paid attention most, is at the perfect sound. You made a massive engineering work; beautiful result!

Ooh, OMD! Such a great choice. I like ‘Tesla Girls’ a lot, especially the instrumental bridge in the intro.
I think the ‘normal’ extended version (4:35), which was released in the European territories, is much better than this remix. Never really ‘understood’ this remix.

Hope you’ll post more OMD in the future. Would be nice to post the European 12 inch of this track as well, so the BTG’ers can decide for themselves if they like the remix or the extended version.

I agree, Stefano. I’d never heard this US mix until now, and it compelled me to run to put on my UK 12″. The extended version is much more of a classic 12″ extended mix, while this mix, I hardly understand how it could help the commercial potential as more than half of it is a rather abstract beat collage. Interesting, but certainly not adding much to the song’s appeal. However, I’m happy Paul did this work, as these mixes are certainly harder to come by!

I will have to check my CD collection maybe i thought that as this compilation was the one that introduced me to Tesla Girls in about 1990

Hi NKelly, that compilation has the original single version, not the extended 4:35 version.
