BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“Love My Way” is a song by English band The Psychedelic Furs. It was released in July 1982 as the first single from their third studio album Forever Now. Written by the four members of the group and produced by Todd Rundgren (who also played marimba on the song), the song reached the top 10 of the charts in New Zealand, top 30 in Australia and the top 50 in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Frontman of the group Richard Butler had a specific audience in mind when he penned the lyrics to this song. He explained himself thus in an interview with Creem in 1982: “It’s basically addressed to people who are f–ked up about their sexuality, and says ‘Don’t worry about it.’ It was originally written for gay people.”
Released in 1982, “Love My Way” peaked at number nine in New Zealand, where it spent 21 weeks on the chart. The song peaked at number 42 in the UK and number 44 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number 30 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart and number 40 on the Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart.
British filmmaker Tim Pope directed the official music video for “Love My Way” in 1982, and it was placed in regular rotation on MTV.
The single was released in the UK with the non-album B-side, “Aeroplane.” In the US, the B-side was changed to a different non-album track, “I Don’t Want to Be Your Shadow”.
The song is featured in the 1983 film Valley Girl and appears on the soundtracks of the 1998 film The Wedding Singer, the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name (where its appearance inspired a major surge in streaming popularity).

The Psychedelic Furs – Love My Way (US Remix)
Released as the B-Side to the 1986 UK release of “Pretty In Pink”. Also on”The 12″ Tape” release. The track was remixed by Ed Thacker. It doesn’t sound that different from the original mix though
Heard for the 1st time (I’m 50 and I love my way!) on the movie “Chiamami col tuo nome (call by your name), loved it immediately!!
PS: my partner can call with his name and I can do the same since we got the same name !
hi paul, good to see you back from the holiday. i always liked alternative rock, and the psychedelic furs were one of my favorite bands. this is one of their classic tracks, and it was played a lot on the radio too. it’s one of their best songs, but they didn’t do much with the song, like a lot of their early ones, they only got into remixes later on, and with other selected tracks, like aeroplane. they have never reissued it, or made new mixes, unlike pretty in pink, which got a lot of attention. they are still around,… Read more »
Great song. Interesting story, I always thought there was an ambiguous sexuality to the song. It almost sounds like he sings “Love my way it ‘s a New-Ro” like it is about New Romantics. I still think I like the US single mix more. That first note of the marimba on this version always gets me, sounds like a cassette getting up to speed or about to be eaten. Granted I think Todd Rundgren did that intentionally.
One of my favourite songs of that decade – and am stunned they never had an official extended remix of it. Come on! It was the 80’s! They had the big hair, the outlandish outfits, it was compulsory to have an extended remix!
Cast la vie. Thanks for the share of this one – the b-side is a corker!
Thank you, Paul! 😊

Many thanks Paul, your site is awesome as your rips, always bringing back good memories. Many thanks
After I watched the movie of the year 2017 – Call Me By Your Name, I decided to check out if there was a 12 inch version of this classic. Curiously only a single version, hosted on this vinyl, was ever released as far as I could find out. Wonderful ‘off’/alternative track
You are correct no official extended version. Kind of a missed opportunity >)
On one my all time faves. Thanks Paul
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
I’m looking forward to hearing this. Cool to see another Psychedelic Furs record on BTG.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Mark 🙂
Such fond memories of this song Paul and a great New Wave classic. I so enjoyed the write-up about the background and all. This is a fantastic band and I have a cherished memory because Vince Ely went on to produce Ministry’s first album, “With Sympathy” and that became one of my favorite albums of all time. Also, Nine Inch Nails new EP has a saxophone on it and Trent Reznor has mentioned the Furs as an inspiration for using this instrument. All of these little factors make my mind go all sorts of places. Thank you Paul for posting… Read more »
One of my favorite singles of the 80s. I watched Call Me By Your Name the other day and the song has a pretty big part in the movie so it inspired this post.
I wasn’t feeling overly Patriotic yesterday and it was really hot outside so we just chilled. We did watch some fireworks that our Hispanic community set off.
Thank you, this is great to hear.
I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never heard this original, William Orbit used it as one of his first solo singles back in 1987, I knew it was a cover. Great writing.
You’re welcome Richard S 🙂
