“Heart Like a Wheel” is a song by the British synthpop group The Human League. It is taken from their 1990 album Romantic?.

“Heart Like a Wheel” was the first single to be taken from the Human League’s sixth studio albumRomantic? It was written by former band member Jo Callis with Eugene Reynolds (of The Rezillos) and features vocals by Philip Oakey, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley; with the synthesizer skills of Neil Sutton. It was recorded at Genetic Sound Studios during 1990 and produced by Martin Rushent who was reconciled with the band after an eight-year gap.

The song is a return to the overtly political lyrics that the Human League sometimes do, but dressed up to a poppy hook that makes it palatable to the public. Whereas “The Lebanon” of 1984 was the Human League’s view of the Israeli Invasion of Southern Lebanon and subsequent civil war, “Heart Like a Wheel” is supposedly a commentary on U.S. military imperialism. Callis’s lyrics are suitably vague using references such as “sell your soul to a holy war”. At a time when Jihad was all but unheard of in the West, it went over the heads of most of the song’s listeners. 11 years after its release, the events of ‘9/11, followed by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, would make the song seem written for that epoch. Although it is rarely something the band dwell on allowing people to read what they want into the lyrics.

Released in the UK in August 1990, “Heart Like a Wheel” reached number 29 in the UK and number 32 in the US. A decade after the release, the record is still popular, featuring in a number of third party remixes including some by William Orbit. Also the band frequently play the song live, as it is a very live-friendly track and although not one of their greatest hits, it is still very popular with audiences. Oakey also now often explains the political message to the audiences usually describing it “an anti-war song”.

Interesting that the ‘William Orbit’ version was issued with this track. He actually mixed several of the other tracks from the same album (‘Romantic’) but these have never been commercially available, or even put out on promo. They are out there if you search hard enough though 🙂

The meaning of the lyrics went over my head – the song is just so good to ever make me stop and wonder. I just kept bopping my head up and down 🙂 Thanks!

Another 80s greats, wouldn’t mind if you made a series, although I have many extended versions on CD. I think Heart Like A Wheel was an excellent continuation of their 80s stuff, strangely underrated. Think I got the UK 12″ of this one (somewhere in the closet) lol, also the CD single which has the same song versions.

Yay – Human League!!! From my home town!!! (Literally – like about half an hour ago – I was just chatting to a guy who used to be Phil Oakey’s boss when he worked in a book store.) Now if you’ve got some of the older stuff ready to roll….

Ah, that glorious moment when the Human League reunited briefly with producer Martin Rushent. One of the highlights of their career imho. And as usual, Paul, your rips sound as good as ever. Thank you so much.

Another great post Paul. I have the Promo which is a gatefold & has a wheel in the front cover that you can turn to change the pictures. Track listing is reversed from the commercial release. Topped my chart for Billboard.

Awesome way to end the week and after a new DOA post too. Love it! Oh and i saw the League a further two times in December 2014. One of my favs live although they don’t mix things up enough or play long enough or regular enough for my liking!

Also i just realised this isn’t even on my hard drive. I hate to think how much stuff i’ve missed from you and hope everything you’ve done from vinyl is re-done at some point. Thought i followed you back in 2011 too maybe it’s on an old hard drive or was one of the things i lost on one of my very unfortunate crashes. I do also have ‘(Keep feeling) Fascination’ from you so i guess that’s another you’ve deleted at some point. A shame as i downloaded the FLAC of that as recently as February 2013.

What an extraordinary melody “Heart Like A Wheel” has! I can’t wait to hear this Paul. I only know the song from its Razormaid! remix. Karen, my wife, is a huge fan of this record too, so we are really looking forward to this release Paul. I’m excited about the William Orbit remix too. I’ve been following Mr. Orbit’s career for years ever since his debut “Prepare To Energize” with the group Torch Song. Thanks for showing us (and your back catalog) so much love. You are the greatest!

Have a fabulous weekend Paul!
