The Dream Academy – Please Please Please (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” is a song originally performed by British group The Smiths. It was released as the B-side of “William, It Was Really Nothing” in 1984 and later featured on the compilation albums Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs.

The Dream Academy covered “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” in 1984. This version peaked at #83 in the UK Singles Chart. The instrumental version of the song is the better known cover version, since it was used in the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (during the Art Institute scene) along with an other Dream Academy song “The Edge of Forever”. A similar (but vocal) single later appeared on the compilation album, Somewhere in the Sun… Best of the Dream Academy.

As a bonus track I have also included the US 7″ mix of “The Love Parade”. This mix is exclusive to the US 7″ single.

I really respect Johnny Marr’s songwriting, and this track is an excellent Smiths’ song. But I prefer listening to Dream Academy’s cover, for several reasons – instrumentation, vocal performance, etc.

It’s like Daryl Hall’s song Everytime You Go Away. I love the original Hall & Oates version, so soulful and sparse. But Paul Young’s cover is just a gorgeous, beautifully arranged pop ballad (with wonderful bass playing by Pino Palladino). It’s usually better suited to my mood.

Thanks for posting this!

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you dj paul.

Most Smiths cover versions are shit, but this is such a beautiful version, and i was singing it only today whilst actually wandering round an art gallery. 🙂 🙂

Thanx!

Absolutely beautiful. You have my eternal thanks, not only for this but for a whole host of 12″ mixes from my youth. Mind you, is there a 12″ of The Edge of Forever? I have a feeling I once saw one, but I can’t be too sure.

Either way, keep up the good work brother. You’re admired worldwide.

Thanks for another classic.

I’m stunned to see that David Gilmour of Pink Floyd produced this. Very interesting.

Simply gorgeous!
I love The Smiths’s version (it’s my second favourite The Smith’s single) and have it on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack.
I also love this The Dream Academy cover, and bought a New Wave compilation CD in the 90s just for their version.

I’ve always assumed the US 7″ for The Love Parade is the same as the UK one. And with all the fuss and talk over it here…I can’t wait to check it out!
Thanks for another brilliant post, Paul!
I guess everybody get what they wanted today!
