The Cure – Primary (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981

“Primary” is a song by English rock band The Cure, released as the sole single from their third studio album Faith (1981).

The song is unusual in that both Simon Gallup and Robert Smith play bass, with the effects pedals on Smith’s giving the leads a unique sound. There are no guitars or keyboards played in the song.

“Primary” was released as a single on March 20, 1981. It reached number 43 in the UK Singles Chart.

“Primary” was the first song by The Cure to be remixed as a separate extended mix for release on 12″ single (and not co-released on other formats, in the way the 12″ version of “A Forest” was also the album version appearing on Seventeen Seconds, for example). In fact, the original 12″ extended mix is, to this day, still only available on the original 12″ single, which has never been reproduced on any other album, making it quite a rare item. The main difference between the 7″ mix (also the album mix) and the 12″ mix is that the extended mix lengthens the instrumental introductions to the song’s verses.

This cover art is the first visual collaboration between the band & Porl and Undy, later better known as Parched Art.

Hello Paul, I like your very professional work and I was wondering if it was possible to have a copy of this title from The Cure? Thanks in advance. Marc

Thanks Paul
Listening to The Cure reminds me of the people and places I remember from 35 years ago!
This extended mix (so well recorded) of Primary (one of my favourite Cure song) is simply awesome!

Thank you again for this and all you do here.

Thanks Paul, what a rare treasure.

Although the quality is a bit so so …
The bass seems quite a bit distorted in the beginning and there is a slight glitch in one beat (about 4 or 5 seconds into the song). I’ve checked it via a quality youtube vid. The distorted bass and the glitch in the beat both aren’t there in that version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONXEPf9rr_I).

Anyway a true gem – thanks for this and all other release.

Thank you!

Seen this 12″. Never listened to it, except a very bad rip on a rubbish tape.

Great you post this gem.

Many thanks for this contribution Paul. Just an observation, in Primary there is a variation of volume.

I’ve been trying to reconstruct Standing On a Beach: The B-Sides (never released on anything but cassette) for years using high quality vinyl sources.

This completes my quest haha…. thanks so much DjPaulT, VERY appreciated

Thank you so much for this one Paul. I think I requested it years ago lol. My copy is very worn so I look forward to hearing your great touch on this. Saw them live last year and thaey wre absolutely brilliant. I took my Daughter as well as she loves them too. They say the apple never falls far from the tree 🙂 Cheers from Oz

After a rough and long day at work, there is nothing better to come home to than a 12-inch mix courtesy of you, dear Paul. And a rare one to boot!! I can already see how much enthusiasm is generated by all of your adoring fans. You have “cured” me of my lethargy and depression with this Paul. Looking forward to listening to it and cocooning myself within its sonic textures, soon to emerge the better mood butterfly.

Many kudos for this one!!!

Jeff

So excited about this Paul! I’ve never heard it! I only have the Primary (Red Mix) from the Close to Me single from the “Mixed Up” era.

So cool Paul – I also didn’t know there was a (rare) extended mix. I’ve also, embarrassingly, never even seen this sleeve, which is quite…. something!

You know I love posts like these. I’m now on my knees praying for another New Wave/Goth week on Burning The Ground. 🙂

On YouTube there is an 8:06 extended version of A Forest. Is it from a rare vintage vinyl release or a more recent re-mixed version? Either way, it sounds great and authentic.

Wow Paul… I’ve been a huge Cure fan all my life and I don’t think I ever knew (probably did but forgot) that there was an extended version of Primary! What a great surprise it is! As a boy, Olivia was my idol and so was The Cure as a teen… BTG is a great place for me then!

Thanks a zillion times Monsieur!

good choice paul,

for people new to the cure, the goth sound is what
they created along with other groups.

nice to see them being represented here.

looking forward to more cure coming up.
