The Cure – Lullaby (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Lullaby” is a 1989 single by The Cure from their album Disintegration. The song is the highest-charting single by the band in their home country, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, it reached number three in Germany and Ireland while becoming a top-ten hit in several other European countries and New Zealand. The music video won the British Video of the Year at the 1990 Brit Awards.

The meaning of “Lullaby” has been speculated by fans, including as a metonymy for addiction or depression, and Smith has offered multiple explanations as to its theme or content, such as childhood nightmares or abuse. Tim Pope, a long-time collaborator of The Cure on many of its music videos, interprets “Lullaby” as an allegory for lead singer Robert Smith’s druggy past.

In North America, the song was released as the second single from Disintegration instead (“Fascination Street” was the first), but did not match its predecessor’s level of success, only reaching number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 23 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart.

Hi Paul, thank you for your fantastic site!
When I played the m3u I just noted that file names and the “Song title” tags don’t match. Great music, anyways!

The music video for this single is still one of my favourites. I don’t remember the Extended Mix so looking forward to hearing it in Hi-Fidelity quality.

Cheers Paul.

The “mixed loud so turn it up” is a reference to the same message on the LP. The reason it was on the LP is because there was too much music crammed on the single disc and the volume of the LP suffered as a result.

Thanks for this Paul.

Memory is tricky thing and I completely forgot this US release was different from the original UK one. I have both original cd singles (UK+US) and I forgot this US Lullaby had the Entreat live songs on it which came out later in 1990.

The cover seem to be on the wrong angle. Is this particular to this release or an error on your side?

Thanks again Paul!

Great song and post, Paul! The Cure is one of those bands that I just didn’t listen to back when they were popular but got into them in the late 90s. I remember a few girls in high school that loved them and if I had listened to The Cure and bought the 12″s, I probably could have hooked up with them. 🙂 Lullaby, Close To Me, and Pictures Of You are classics in my opinion. They remind me of the overall movie Some Kind of Wonderful. Thanks again! p.s. the 2018 “Mixed Up” 3-cd set is something to own… Read more »

How fabulous Paul – always love it when you post The Cure. 🙂

ISTR BITD that the note on the back of the sleeve to ‘turn the volume up’ led to some disapproval either in the press or on TV from angry parents saying it was irresponsible, and that kids’ listening on Walkmans would end up with damaged hearing. It seemed funny to us back then. I did end up losing a bit of my top-end though. :-/ Heed the warnings kids!

Actually what It meant was exactly what is written… It was mixed and mastered in a way that you could crank it way up and it never went ugly and sounded great still without any harshness. Kate Bush The Dreaming was done the same way and sounds wonderful no matter how loud you go.

That was in 1989 before all the brickwall dynamic range loudness war crazyness of the mid 90’s that is still keep going today unfortunately!

This song is fantastic: it has many layers and tons of effects. Great to play it as loud as you can bear.

This is a “phantas-mic” record Paul. Hypnotic, Gothic and haunting. I love the imagery in the lyrics and it really lulls me into a trance-dance state whenever I hear it. A great track for this time of year. You keep expanding my Halloween playlist every year. Thanks for posting this as it is another favorite of mine. It’s bewitching!!

Hi Paul, Thanks for another great song, more in the goth territory. For me the Cure’s album disintegration was one of their peaks. I loved the soundscapes, and mood that the album has. Yes, it’s long, and not for everybody. It did have several singles, and the b-sides, make up for a live album. I had all the vinyl singles at the time, and also started buying all the cd-singles at the same time also. The cure kind of lost favor with me after that, and haven’t released much lately, although its said they’re working on another album. They do… Read more »
