BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
“In Between Days” (sometimes listed as “Inbetween Days” or “In-Between Days”) is a song by the English rock band The Cure, released in July 1985 as the first single from the band’s sixth album The Head on the Door.
The song was a big international success. In the UK, it was the band’s ninth chart single and their fourth consecutive Top 20 hit; while in the US it was their first single to reach the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 99. It was a Top 20 hit in Australia and New Zealand and also charted in several European countries, increasing the popularity of the band.
The song is poppy and upbeat, featuring strummed acoustic guitars under a snappy synthesizer riff, although the song’s lyrical themes of aging, loss and fear do not particularly reflect the upbeat tempo of the music. It features a distinctive drum intro by Boris Williams and a bass line reminiscent of “Dreams Never End” by New Order. The extended version, only released on the 12″ single in North America, features a longer introduction to the song.

When you post “Close To Me” be aware that the 7″ and 12″ US versions are remixes with some “tidbits” thrown in. (original album lengths though, no extensions) This is a different single mix than appeared on “Mixed Up”.
Whoa, this is huge to get – never heard the B-side, and can’t wait to get the remix – and THANK YOU for always posting in 24-bit FLAC as well as regular FLAC and MP3. You’re the best!
thanks for new wave hit
Paul you have done it. Posted the best pop song ever! Catchy melody, eighties indie voice and jangly guitars…perfect. Thank you for not forgetting this gem :o)
Thanks Paul, I’ve got this vinyl but I always prefer your rips, your gear is top-notch.
Thank you so much for this. More Cure! More obscure!
Another great post Paul, I like the Indie turn this week is taking.
I agree with Negaive1, Head On The Door is such a good album.
Thanks Paul! Brilliant Cure song! Great job on the scan of the artwork as well!
Hopefully I can make it 5/5 tomorrow 🙂
paul, i really enjoy most of the mid-era cure songs, especially around when the prior issue of ‘the walk’ EP came out, but ‘the head on the door’ album was very good. there was cool video for this song, and it was released on a few formats, the 7 inch b-side was ‘exploding boy’, and there was also a pal CDV for it too. the remix is not much though, and is very short, unlike some of their other better mixes. the song itself is very good though. i wish they had done more with it. thanks paul for another… Read more »
I agree the remix could have been better -1 they kept this one very minimal. The b-side is great :
I read recently that Robert or the rest of the band had nothing to do with this remix. This was the reason why it was not included on the recent Mixed Up release. Thanks for sharing this.
So now you have delivered to us all the original extended versions which have been left out on this years expanded release of “MIXED UP”, the other two are “Primary” and “The Love Cats”. A big THANK YOU!!!
That’s awesome news Christian 🙂
Like the rest above, I too am most thankful to you Paul for this Cure song. They are such a great band and I love when I see one of their singles grace Burning The Ground.
Jeff
I enjoyed posting it Jeff 🙂
That´s funny – I listened to In Between Days just this morning on my way to work. It was only the second Cure single I really liked (after The Love Cats) and the first one to chart in Germany at #45. Brilliant b-side too, Stop Dead. I really like that one. Their brilliant follow-up single Close To Me, which I hope to find here some day, did not chart at all. Would you believe it…
Nice one, Paul. Thank you.
You’re welcome Song And dance. I to post “Close To Me” someday 🙂
Thanks Paul. Loved this single. I recently got the 3cd version of The Cure’s Mixed Up which has a lot of cool classic remixes.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
Thank you! This is the version of In Between Days that I’ve been searching for. I had this single at the time.
You’re welcome David 🙂
