Burning The Ground Exclusive
Released as the fourth single from Taylor Dayne’s multi-platinum debut album Tell It to My Heart (1988), “Don’t Rush Me” was written by Alexandra Forbes and Jeff Franzel. The song continued Dayne’s hot streak, becoming her third consecutive U.S. Top 10 hit. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1988 and also climbed the Adult Contemporary and Dance charts, solidifying her as one of the standout voices of the late ’80s.
The 12” I’m posting today is the U.S. promo-only release, which stands apart from the standard single. This pressing contains exclusive House Mixes that were originally only issued in the United States and France. These remixes gave “Don’t Rush Me” a club-friendly update, layering in deeper grooves and house beats while keeping Dayne’s dynamic vocal front and center.
Another gem from the golden era of the 12-inch single, this promo captures Taylor Dayne at the peak of her chart power while also giving DJs something fresh to spin.

Thank you. Man, she did rule the airwaves and then wham, she was gone. Hard to image what that must be like for an artist.
I understand that it must be hard to deal with; one minute you are all the rage, and the next you are not.
Thanks, Paul! Late reply here but I wanted to let everyone know that these mixes (and more) are on her Tell It To My Heart (Deluxe Edition) album release. So, please support the artist by purchasing the 2-cd set. Yes, I know Paul does an excellent job but I really, really try to find all his rips on cd releases so I can support the artist (and hopefully encourage the labels to release more mixes on cd format). Thanks so much, Paul!!
I bought the original album back in the day and the 2-cd set, when it was released, mostly because of the bonus material. It’ well worth the money! That being said, Paul’s new transfer sounds way better than my CD. Sadly (or fortunately), the same is true for most other CDs I have. I have just about every Depeche Mode release in just about any conceivable version (including all their box sets), but I mostly just listen to Paul’s transfers.
So, I agree with your push to support the artists, but Paul’s transfers are really more about the QUALITY and the occasional super-rare out-of-print vinyl. I would imagine, based on the comments for each release, that Paul’s followers are not coming here to “cheat the artist”, but to supplement their most likely already massive collection. 🙂
1988 really was the pinnacle of the 12″ single. They were everywhere, even in mainstream stores, soon to be replaced with cassette maxi singles and CD singles, at this stage the remix became a part of the marketing process, with songs released later in the album cycle, sometimes baring little resemblance to the originals on the album. New, fresh and club ready, the 12″ remix was essential. And not to be outdone, the 12″ promo’s made only for DJ’s offered another too-cool-for-school take that you could only hear going out or on a hip radio station. More than once the… Read more »
Joey, you nailed it — 1988 really was such a sweet spot for the 12″ single. I remember exactly what you’re saying: walking into a regular record store and seeing walls of 12″s right next to the albums. By then the remix had truly become its own artform, sometimes almost like a completely new track. And yes, those promo-only versions were gold — the thrill of the hunt to track them down is part of what makes sharing them now so much fun. I still remember my own introduction back in ’83 when I stumbled on the 12″ of Olivia… Read more »
I love this single!! I’m not familiar with these mixes (for good reason – they’re quite rare!!). As others have mentioned, Taylor Dayne was underrated given her competition at the time, yet she had such a large presence! She really was part of what made that scene such a great time for dance/pop on the radio and MTV. Big thank you for sharing this rare gem with us Paul!!
Thank you, Retro Hound! I couldn’t agree more — Taylor had such a commanding presence, both on MTV and on the radio, but she often doesn’t get the recognition she deserves compared to some of her peers. That’s what makes these promo-only mixes so fun to dig up and share — they really highlight just how strong she was in that late ’80s dance/pop moment. Rare gems like this are exactly why I love keeping Burning the Ground going. I’m so glad you’re enjoying this one!
The great voice of Taylor Dayne, a fabulous singer
underappreciated in the 80s, everyone preferred to see and listen to Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, or the new singers Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, but there, ladies and gentlemen, was a great singer.
Well said, Ruben! Taylor really did have the pipes to stand alongside all of those big names, even if she didn’t always get the same spotlight. Her voice was huge, soulful, and totally unmistakable — these rare mixes are a great reminder of just how much talent she brought to the late ’80s scene.
Thanks Paul, I’m glad you liked my comment.
Hey Paul Thanks For The Jamm. Taylor Reminds Me Of Teena Marie With That Strong Vocal.
Thanks so much! That’s a great comparison — Taylor definitely had that same kind of powerhouse energy Teena Marie brought, where the vocals just cut right through and carried the whole track. Always a thrill to share jams like this!
I don’t remember this single but it definitely sounds interesting. Richie Jones had a good dance project with Eric Kupper in the early 90’s called Degrees Of Motion that released a few singles.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Thanks, Mark! Yeah, Richie Jones really had a knack for creating strong dance mixes, and Degrees Of Motion with Eric Kupper was such a solid project — “Do You Want It Right Now” is still a favorite. Ironically, Taylor Dayne covered that song on her debut album. Glad this one caught your attention!
I lit up like a Christmas tree when I saw that you posted something by, Taylor Dayne!! Gosh, what a voice! This promo is killer! Although I’m not much of a House music fan (mainly because the genre tired itself out quickly, in my opinion) this version is fierce! I still love it when she did the electro-hop versions the best!! That voice and sizzling hot production would make the whole sound sizzle! I liked her as an actor, too.
Thank you, Paul, for this exciting slice of 12-inch heaven!!
Jeff
Jeff, I love that reaction! 🙂 Taylor really did have that voice — it could make any mix or style shine. I totally get what you mean about the electro-hop versions, they had such an energy all their own. And yes, she brought that same charisma to acting too. I’m so glad you’re enjoying this promo — thanks as always for the kind words!
soooo unexpected!!! that’s what I love about Burning The Ground!!!
Haha, thank you, Raymond! Gotta keep you on your toes — you never know what’s going to pop up next on Burning The Ground! 🙂 That’s half the fun of digging through these crates.
I always found her to be a somewhat “guilty pleasure” amongst the music I enjoyed at the time. Her vocals captivate and elevate even mundane pop songs into another level. Stood out amongst her peers as something special. Love this remix. Not long ago I was getting quite obsessed with many of her remixes… she did a great “comeback”song awhile back then kinda disappeared again… what is she up to these days ???
Great post!
I have always loved Taylor Dayne and never understood why she didn’t go further than her first three albums. She was definitely up there vocally with her peers, like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I know that she still tours and occasionally releases a song digitally.
I loved her too but was into UK “modern rock” acts at the time so admitting her voice blew me away would’ve been why I said “guilty pleasure.” lol. I loved her comeback hit and the tracks from her 4th indie released album, but just now realized she did a full 5th album that I now have to get! See how your posts promote the artists!!!!
I take that back…I have 2 comeback songs, Beautiful and My Heart Can’t Change – which is a great track written by the New Radicals guy… she should do a new album via Patreon or something…
I remember Taylor Dayne repeating in interviews at the time that she was more into Heavy Metal than Pop music. I think if she had switched to “alternative” music (like Alanis Morisette perhaps), she would have survived the 90s. And she could have satisfied her old fans with Remix 12″es!
I’ve never heard that before, but THAT would have been sooo interesting!
Thank you for another amazing PROMO, Paul! I love when you share these types of rare 12″ records. With her powerful, soulful voice, Taylor Dayne really stood out from the rest of the dancefloor-friendly releases at the time, most of which were produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman, and these club remixes truly bring out the best in this song!
According to Discogs, the version you shared from your US Promo was previously only released in a small batch in France and Spain!!! That’s really amazing, Paul!!!!!! (the original remixes were also remixed by Richie Jones, but are 1 minute shorter)
Thank you so much, Axel! I couldn’t agree more — Taylor really had the kind of powerhouse voice that cut through everything happening on the dancefloor in the late ’80s. These promo-only mixes show just how versatile she was beyond the radio edits, and I love being able to share them. Glad you’re enjoying this one!
