BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Sledgehammer” is a song by British musician Peter Gabriel from his 1986 album So. It hit number one in Canada on 21 July 1986 where it spent four weeks; number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States on 26 July 1986; and number four in the UK singles chart, thanks in part to a popular and influential music video. It was his biggest hit in North America and ties with “Games Without Frontiers” as his biggest hit in the United Kingdom.

The song’s music video has won a number of awards, including a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards. Gabriel was also nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. As of 2011, “Sledgehammer” is the most played music video in the history of MTV.

Peter Gabriel – Big Time (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Big Time” is a song by Peter Gabriel from his 1986 album So. It was his second top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #8.

“Big Time” alternates mode between A♭ minor (Aeolian) in the chorus and A♭ Dorian during the verses and is played at the speed of 116 bpm. The song’s bass guitar part is unique in that backing bassist Tony Levin and then-backing drummer Jerry Marotta teamed up for the main bassline. Using one of Levin’s fretless basses, Levin handled the fingerings while Marotta hit his drumsticks on the strings, which is why the bass part sounds percussive. Inspired by this sound, Levin later invented Funk Fingers, which were little drumstick ends that could be attached to the fingers to achieve a similar bass guitar effect in concert. Police drummer Stewart Copeland plays drums on the song.

DISCO FRIDAY!  Has been hijacked this week by the Jacksons. But don’t worry it’ll be back next week.

“Body”, the third single released from The Jackson’s 1984 album Victory, became a moderate hit peaking at #47 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song features lead vocals by Marlon Jackson. A music video was filmed for the song however Michael Jackson does not appear in it.

Jacksons – Torture (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“Torture” is the second single released off the album Victory by the band, The Jacksons. Written by Jackie Jackson and fellow Motown veteran Kathy Wakefield, the song is about someone ending a relationship, and the torture that a person can receive whilst trying to end it. Jackie was originally going to sing the song with his brother, Michael, but Jackie’s role instead went to Jermaine Jackson, whose availability for the album was in question until the last minute. The rest of the Jacksons sang the chorus along with Michael and Jermaine.

The song received a mixed reaction from critics. The music video was most well known for Michael not being available, in which case a dummy had to be put in his place throughout the video. Paula Abdul choreographed the video, in which various scenes of torture are displayed, with the Jacksons being on the receiving end of most of the torture. The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the second best selling single on the album, behind “State of Shock”. It also peaked at number 26 on the UK charts.

Reception for the song was mixed.The Philadelphia Inquirer said that the song was “a hard-rock dance tune with blaring synthesizers and buzzing guitars.” The reviewer however, didn’t like the song, summing up their distaste in one word, “Yawn.” The Sacramento Bee complimented Jackie Jackson for being the only person “besides Michael,” to “rise above the generic,” citing “Torture” as one of the two songs by Jackie that were more than exceptional on the album.

William Ruhlmann of Allmusic considered the song a “Track pick”, and mentioned that the song’s popularity probably had to do more with the fact that Michael Jackson was involved. “So, here one has the ludicrous situation of an album in which Marlon Jackson has as prominent a role as Michael Jackson. That’s how it sounded to listeners in 1984, anyway, and they weren’t fooled — “State of Shock”, on which Michael shared vocals with Mick Jagger, was a gold Top Ten hit, and “Torture”, which teamed Michael with Jermaine, made the Top 40, while the album went platinum. But the tracks by other group members went virtually ignored,” Ruhlmann said.
