The Cure – Let’s Go To Bed (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

Re-Rip Remaster

Originally I posted this one back in September of 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip using my newer upgraded equipment. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“Let’s Go to Bed” is a 1982 single by The Cure. It later appeared on the album Japanese Whispers.

In the aftermath of the bleak Pornography, Robert Smith returned from a month-long detox in the Lake District to write the antithesis to what The Cure currently represented. Written as a sarcastic reflection on sexual imagery in pop music, the single was a surprise hit. It was most successful in Australia, reaching #15.

The origins of “Let’s Go to Bed” lie in “Temptation”, one of the demos for Pornography. The song is a relatively upbeat, guitar-driven instrumental. In August of 1982, soon after Simon Gallup’s departure from the band, Smith demoed a vocal version of the track, entitled “Temptation Two”, a psychedelic piece not far removed from the Pornography album but somewhat lighter in tone. At the end of the song, Smith sings a string of wordless syllables, nearly identical to the “doo doo doo”s of the later song. The final version was debuted on Kid Jensen’s radio show on 27 November 1982.

Robert Smith has often stated that he wished its b-side, the darker “Just One Kiss” (also first performed during the session) was released as a single.

A re-post of this would be much appreciated. Used to have it — long gone. Would love to hear it clean and in hi-fi. So many bad rips out there — keep up the great work. Cheers!

I downloaded it once, and I’ll do it again: this time in the awesome 24bits!! Still waiting for other Cure stuff, please!!!
No pre-1987 extended versions are available on CD (I mean: official discography. There are some CD bootlegs with this stuff). The 1990 Mixed Up album include some originals extended versions: Why can’t I be you?, Pictures of you, Lullaby….
Thank a lot (again! and again and again….)

A singles box from The Cure is way past long overdue. Blondie, Erasure, Duran Duran, Elvis Costello, and others have all been given the box treatment–some in multi volumes. None of the expanded editions of The Cure’s albums have included their 12″ single versions of respective singles. Instead we got demos upon demos. And I’m not sure about anyone else out there, but I’ve had my fill of Cure live versions & b-sides that just sound like the band fell asleep on their instruments while Smith rambles on and on and on…and on.

Thanks for the post – one of the best CURE songs.

I too do not understand. I think they should do a special iTunes version of Joint the Dots with… EVERYTHING!

A longer version of Let’s Go To Bed? Awesome!

You don’t happen to have the 12” of The Lovecats, do you? I found it years ago from an online site, but the file got corrupted in a harddrive crash. 🙁 So sad.
