The Cure – Pictures Of You (Limited Edition) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1990

A. Front

“Pictures of You” is the fourth and final single from the British rock band The Cure’s 1989 album Disintegration. The single dubuted on the UK singles chart on March 31, 1990 and peaked at #24. In the US the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 21, 1990 peaking at #7 the single also charted on the US Dance and Modern Rock tracks charts respectively.

Many of lead singer Robert Smith’s compositions are inspired by literature. “Pictures Of You” was based on an essay by Myra Poleo called The Dark Power of Ritual Pictures. Smith says that after reading it, he destroyed his old personal photos and many of his home videos in an effort to wipe away his past. He came to regret the decision a few days later.

Rolling Stone magazine placed “Pictures Of You” 278th on their 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

**The live tracks on the b-side are one continuous track totaling 10:05 on subsequent CD single versions the songs are split into two seperate tracks. I have left them as they were presented on the vinyl release.

The Cure – Let’s Go To Bed (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

Re-Rip Remaster

Originally I posted this one back in September of 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip using my newer upgraded equipment. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“Let’s Go to Bed” is a 1982 single by The Cure. It later appeared on the album Japanese Whispers.

In the aftermath of the bleak Pornography, Robert Smith returned from a month-long detox in the Lake District to write the antithesis to what The Cure currently represented. Written as a sarcastic reflection on sexual imagery in pop music, the single was a surprise hit. It was most successful in Australia, reaching #15.

The origins of “Let’s Go to Bed” lie in “Temptation”, one of the demos for Pornography. The song is a relatively upbeat, guitar-driven instrumental. In August of 1982, soon after Simon Gallup’s departure from the band, Smith demoed a vocal version of the track, entitled “Temptation Two”, a psychedelic piece not far removed from the Pornography album but somewhat lighter in tone. At the end of the song, Smith sings a string of wordless syllables, nearly identical to the “doo doo doo”s of the later song. The final version was debuted on Kid Jensen’s radio show on 27 November 1982.

Robert Smith has often stated that he wished its b-side, the darker “Just One Kiss” (also first performed during the session) was released as a single.

The Cure – The Antidote Mega Mix (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1991

Another nicely crafted Mega Mix from the ON-USound label. Released in 1991 this Mega Mix features The Cure. The mix includes some the biggest hits from the boys from Crawley, West Sussex.

The Cure are an English alternative rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex in 1976. The band has experienced several line-up changes, with frontman, vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Robert Smith being the only constant member. The Cure first began releasing music in the late 1970s with its debut album Three Imaginary Boys (1979); this, along with several early singles, placed the band as part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 1980s, the band’s increasingly dark and tormented music helped form the gothic rock genre.

After the release of Pornography (1982), the band’s future was uncertain and Smith was keen to move past the gloomy reputation his band had acquired. With the 1982 single “Let’s Go to Bed” Smith began to place a pop sensibility into the band’s music (as well as a unique stage look). The Cure’s popularity increased as the decade wore on, especially in the United States where the songs “Just Like Heaven”, “Lovesong” and “Friday I’m in Love” entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. By the start of the 1990s, The Cure were one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the world. The band is estimated to have sold 27 million albums as of 2004. The Cure have released thirteen studio albums, 10 EPs and over thirty singles during the course of their career. Since 2010, they have been working on a fourteenth studio album.
