The Belle Stars – Iko Iko (US 12″) (1989)

Burning The Ground Exclusive

NEW 2026 Transfer
NEW Meticulous Audio Restoration
NEW 2026 Bonus Tracks

Original post date: October 17, 2012

With Fat Tuesday in full swing, there’s no better time to revisit the joyous pulse of “Iko Iko.” Rooted in the Mardi Gras Indian traditions of New Orleans, the song has traveled across decades and continents — and The Belle Stars’ vibrant version remains one of its most recognizable incarnations.

Originally released in 1982, their take on the New Orleans classic reached #35 on the UK Singles Chart, introducing the chant-driven anthem to a new wave audience. Bright percussion, tight harmonies, and an infectious groove gave the track a polished yet celebratory feel that stood apart from much of the synth-heavy pop of the era.

The Rain Man Revival

In 1988 The song found an even larger audience when it appeared in the opening scene of Rain Man, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The high-profile placement brought “Iko Iko” back into the spotlight, leading to a remix and re-release tied to the film’s momentum.

The renewed push paid off:

#7 in Australia

#14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (1989)

#7 on the US Dance Chart

For many American listeners, this cinematic moment was their introduction to the song — proof of how a well-placed soundtrack feature could reignite a single years after its original release.

A Timeless Mardi Gras Anthem

Long before its pop and Hollywood success, “Iko Iko” was popularized in 1965 by The Dixie Cups, whose spontaneous, percussion-driven recording helped cement the chant in mainstream culture. The Belle Stars carried that celebratory spirit forward, preserving its call-and-response energy while giving it a crisp, early-’80s sheen.

It’s a song built for days like today — colorful, communal, and rhythm-driven. Whether you’re celebrating on Bourbon Street or simply marking Fat Tuesday from home, “Iko Iko” captures the heartbeat of Carnival.

A Brand-New 2026 Transfer

Today’s feature is a brand-new 2026 meticulous audio transfer, carefully restored to bring out every layer of percussion and vocal harmony with clarity and warmth. The result is a dynamic, punchy presentation that lets the groove breathe while preserving the character of the original pressing.

To make this edition even more special, I’ve included two NEW bonus tracks sourced from the legendary remix services Disconet and Rhythm Stick — both vinyl-only DJ mixes that expand the song’s dancefloor energy. These extended interpretations showcase how club culture embraced the track, stretching its celebratory rhythm into deeper, more percussive territory.

It’s a fitting way to honor a song that has thrived in so many settings: street parades, radio charts, movie theaters, and nightclubs.

On this Fat Tuesday, turn it up loud. Let the chant roll. And celebrate the enduring magic of “Iko Iko.”

Enigma – Sadness (Part 1) (Hot Tracks & Rhythm Stick Mixes) (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1990

If you’re a fan of Enigma’s groundbreaking 1990 hit “Sadness (Part 1),” you’re in for a treat! I’ve put together two very special remixes of this iconic track, both of which are vinyl-only exclusives. These mixes come from two of the most influential remix services of the 80s and 90s: Hot Tracks and Rhythm Stick.

Rhythm Stick Remix – Steve Bourasa

The Rhythm Stick version was expertly remixed by the legendary Steve Bourasa. Known for his innovative style, Bourasa takes “Sadness (Part 1)” to new heights by incorporating samples from “Hippie Chick” (Soho’s 1990 hit), adding a longer and more hypnotic intro, eerie chimes, and other intricate elements that give this version a haunting, atmospheric feel. Steve’s take elevates the mystique of the original while offering a fresh and dynamic club-ready twist. This remix is a true testament to his skill and creative vision.

Hot Tracks Remix – Volker Lindner

On the Hot Tracks side, the remix comes from Volker Lindner, a name you may not hear often since he only contributed a couple of remixes for the service. What makes this version stand out is its exclusivity. The mix was never widely circulated, making this vinyl pressing the definitive way to experience Lindner’s work. While Hot Tracks did include a version of this remix on some of their later “Best Of” compilations, it was heavily edited. Many of the original samples were removed due to rights clearance issues, which means that the full-length mix on this pressing remains the ultimate collector’s edition.

Why These Remixes Matter

Both the Rhythm Stick and Hot Tracks versions of “Sadness (Part 1)” represent an era when remix services ruled the dance floors. These vinyl-only treasures are a nostalgic reminder of a time when DJs and remixers pushed creative boundaries, crafting unique versions of hits for clubs and dance enthusiasts. For fans of Enigma and collectors of rare remixes, these two versions are a must-hear.

So whether you’re here for the ethereal vibes of Steve Bourasa’s extended mix or the elusive exclusivity of Volker Lindner’s Hot Tracks remix, both takes celebrate the brilliance of Enigma and the artistry of remix culture during its golden age.

Stay tuned for more rare gems and exclusive mixes here on Burning the Ground!

Various Artists – The Great 88′ Top Pop CD Medley (Rhythm Stick US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

As 2019 comes to a close and we begin a new year I thought it would be fun to post a medley from a great remix service Rhythm Stick. This particular medley closed out the year 1988 and features thirteen plus minutes of some of that year’s biggest dance hits. It is taken from Rhythm Stick 1-1 the services first ever release. The track was mixed by legendary remixer Steve Bourasa who also worked for Hot Tracks, Direct Hit, and Ultimix just to name a few. Steve created this medley using practically every CD Rhyth Stick had in the house according to the releases insert. I hope you enjoy this record as we party into 2020.

Wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year!
