Patti LaBelle – Oh, People (The JM Remix) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

“Oh, People” is the second single from Winner in You, the eighth solo album from Patti LaBelle, released on June 30, 1986. The song is a socially conscious anthem with lyrics pleading to individuals to unite and “build the world we want together.”

The song was a moderate success, reaching number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 7 on the Billboard R&B chart while also reaching number 26 in the United Kingdom. It also reached several European charts peaking at number 31 in the Netherlands (AKA the Dutch singles chart) and number 36 in New Zealand.

In the UK two seperate 12″ singles were released both with different A side remixes. The first a remix by Richard Perry (Extended Remix Version) and the second included a remix by Julian Mendelsohn (The JM MIx). For this post I have included the Richard Perry mix as a bonus.

Musical Youth – Youth Of Today (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. Front

R E Q U E S T

Musical Youth was formed by Frederick Waite Sr. who discovered that his sons Patrick and Frederick Jr. were talented musicians. Frederick Jr. played drums and Patrick played bass. Mr. Waite invited a friend’s two sons to participate as well. Kelvin Grant played guitar while his older brother Michael played keyboards. Mr. Waite sang lead vocals himself at first.

Once the band gained notoriety from record companies, Mr. Waite decided the lead vocalist should be just as old as the boys were and so Dennis Seaton, a schoolmate of Frederick Jr.’s, took over.

In 1982, they signed to MCA Records and their first single “Pass the Dutchie” was an instant hit.

The bands second single “Youth Of Today” and the title of their debut album did not garner the same impact as their previous single “Pass The Dutchie”. In the United States “Youth Of Today” failed to chart while in the UK the single peaked at #13. The songs highest chart position was in the Netherlands where it reached #4.
