Camouflage – Handsome (Germany 12″) (1991)

Burning The Ground Exclusive

Today we’re stepping into an overlooked corner of early-’90s synthpop with “Handsome,” a track that deserved far more attention than it ever received. Released only in Germany as the second single from Camouflage’s 1991 studio album Meanwhile, “Handsome” marks a fascinating moment in the band’s evolution—one that often gets overshadowed by their late-’80s classics.

By the time Meanwhile arrived, Camouflage were already known for sleek, melodic synthpop craftsmanship, thanks to earlier hits like “The Great Commandment” and “Love Is a Shield.” But Meanwhile pushed them in a more organic, band-driven direction, integrating live instrumentation while still keeping their electronic backbone intact. “Handsome” sits right at the center of this stylistic shift.

Produced by a Synthpop Legend

A major part of what makes “Handsome” noteworthy is the involvement of producer Colin Thurston, whose résumé reads like a map of synthpop’s golden age. Thurston, of course, worked his magic on early Duran Duran, helped shape David Bowie’s landmark “Heroes”, and guided the earliest recordings of Talk Talk. His production touch on “Handsome” gives the track a polished, dynamic heft that blends Camouflage’s melodic sensibilities with the more muscular, rhythmic textures that defined early-’90s pop.

A Single That Slipped Through the Cracks

Despite its pedigree and strong production, “Handsome” ultimately failed to chart, making it one of Camouflage’s more obscure singles. Its limited German-only release didn’t help, but even so, it remains a gem for fans of the band and collectors of early-’90s synthpop. There’s an earnestness to the song—a push toward growth and reinvention—that reflects where Camouflage were artistically at the time.

The non-charting status doesn’t diminish its charm. If anything, it adds to the single’s cult appeal. It’s one of those tracks that rewards rediscovery, especially for listeners who enjoy the transition era between the analog synthpop of the ’80s and the increasingly hybrid sound of the ’90s.

Rediscovering Meanwhile Through “Handsome”

Revisiting “Handsome” today is a reminder that Camouflage were never content to simply repeat themselves. The band’s willingness to explore new textures, paired with Thurston’s experienced hand in the studio, results in a track that’s both quintessentially Camouflage and quietly adventurous.

If “Handsome” slipped past you the first time, now’s the perfect moment to give it a fresh listen. For fans of synthpop’s deeper cuts—and especially collectors of productions by Colin Thurston—this single is well worth pulling off the shelf again.

NEO A4 – Say This To Me (Canada 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988

“Say This To Me” is a 1988 single by the Canadian rock/new wave band NEO A4. The song is a classic example of late 80s synth-pop, incorporating melodic synth lines, punchy electronic drums, and smooth vocals. The song reflects the era’s fascination with futuristic themes and electronic experimentation. Although the band NEO A4 did not achieve widespread fame compared to some of their contemporaries, their track stood out in underground and electronic music circles.

The song is from the band’s self-titled album (1988) and was featured in the movie  “Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan” (1989), adding to the song’s cult status. It never appeared on the film’s soundtrack.

The legendary Colin Thurston produced “Say This to Me” giving even more weight to the song’s significance. Thurston was a highly regarded producer in the 80s, known for his work with major acts like Duran Duran and Talk Talk.

NEO A4 released four studio albums before disbanding in 1990.

Duran Duran – Carnival (Mini LP) (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982

  • NEW 2022 Transfer!
  • NEW Meticulous Restoration!

Originally posted May 18, 2017

“Carnival” is a mini-lp by Duran Duran, released in various countries by Capitol-EMI in September 1982.

As part of Capitol’s shift in marketing strategy for Duran Duran from New Romantic act to dance band over the course of 1982 (in a bid to shift more units of the Rio album), it was decided to release an EP of remixed tracks in various territories globally to capitalise on increased night-club play and to try to replicate that success on radio.

Part of this strategy involved producer David Kershenbaum remixing various Rio’ tracks. Most of these remixes also appeared on the Carnival release as well as various twelve-inch singles.

The demand for Duran Duran material during the autumn of 1982 was quite high. DJs who heard the new mixes could not get enough, and started to put the dance mixes on the air. During the week of 2 October, the US version of the Carnival EP actually entered the album charts at #98. It was gone by the following week.

The success of the Carnival EP gave the band enough clout to bring Kershenbaum back in to remix the entire A-side of the Rio album, which was re-issued in the United States in November 1982.

Due to the fact that Carnival was meant to capitalise on Duran Duran’s burgeoning dance-oriented success, the tracklisting around the world differed from region to region.

For the North American release – released both in Canada and the US – the track listing changed slightly, incorporating among other things, a new Kershenbaum mix of minor single “My Own Way” which featured additional lyrics left off the original album version as well as the ‘rhythm section punched up, making it ideal for dancing’. This mix eventually resurfaced on the Kershenbaum version of the Rio album in November 1982. The EP also featured the full length David Kershenbaum remix of “Hold Back the Rain”, which is quite similar in structure to the version on the B-side of the “Save A Prayer” twelve-inch single. However the guitars are more prominent on the EP mix, and the keyboard and bass are quieter in some places. This mix also featured on the Japanese Carnival EP, with a slighty longer fade out that actual runs completely to the end of the in-studio performance. This full length version was edited down by about half a minute (with sections of the outro choruses cut down) to produce the 6:32 album remix version featured on the North American re-release of Rio.

The North American tracklisting is rounded out by Night Versions of singles “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Girls on Film”, lifted directly from their respective twelve-inches. Looks-wise, the EP was similar to the Dutch release but came in a purple sleeve, instead of white.

Duran Duran – Carnival (Mini LP) (Europe 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982

  • NEW 2022 Transfer!
  • NEW Meticulous Restoration!

Originally posted May 17, 2017

“Carnival” is a dance music EP by Duran Duran, originally released in various markets around the world in September 1982 by EMI.

Due to the fact that Carnival was meant to capitalise on Duran Duran’s burgeoning dance-oriented success, the tracklisting around the world differed from region to region.

The Dutch EP, released in a white sleeve with photos taken from the Rio tour book, featured twelve-inch versions – or ” Night Versions” in early Duran Duran parlance – lifted from four of the band’s more popular singles – “Hungry Like the Wolf”, “Rio”, “Planet Earth” and “Girls on Film”. There is a rare misprint of the Dutch sleeve, stating “Hold Back the Rain” to be included instead of “Planet Earth”.

The Night Version of “Girls on Film” is actually slightly different from the version that appeared on the EMI twelve-inch single, clocking in at just around 15 seconds longer, with a slighty different balance in the mix, and featuring the camera shutter clicking sound effect as heard in the short version. Also, the David Kershenbaum Night Version mix of “Rio” was commercially exclusive to this EP (it also featured on an American promo twelve-inch), as the “Rio” twelve-inch single featured “Rio” (Pt II) as the lead mix.
