BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“Breakout” is a single from British pop act Swing Out Sister’s debut album It’s Better to Travel.
The single reached the number four position in the UK in 1986, and rose to number six pop and number one adult contemporary in the US in 1987. The song also resulted in a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
The single was written and performed while the group was still a trio. It was one of their biggest hits, and the song most closely associated with the act. In the US, “Breakout” remains a staple of adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio station playlists.

Thanks Paul! Swing Out Sisters music is wonderful. Please repost Surrender, it´s muy favorite song.
Great job. Thanks a lot!
Love this song. Have this 12″ another one I haven’t heard it 20 years.
Thanks!
Surrender used to be on this site too. What happened?
Catchy as ever. Thanks Paul 🙂
3X Thanks DjPaulT! Memorable track..sank well during the Christmas season that year. Cheers!!
Great band , wonderful song , please more swing out sister songs and versions , congratulations for your great job , greetings From Brazil
one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I love it. Tnx Dj
Thank you Paul!!!
In 1993, I got my first job at a radio station and this was the very first song I played out live. It was a song I always loved so to be the first song, made it even more special. Thanks for the wonderful memory!
Classy music from 80’s made by real musicians. I always wondered why they chosed for their high quality music a mediocre singer like Corinne Drewery.
Thanks for posting 😉
There was a very good reissue of the first Swing Out Sister album a short while back. Four mixes of “Breakout” on it but not the Carnival mix! Thanks for filling in that gap!
Glad that you had a break yesterday, Paul. We all need a recharge from time to time. Breakout is my number 1 single of 1986! Thanks for posting, Paul! The song is totally infectious and the video bubbly! Breakout is actually inspired by the World Cup, as “There was quite a lot of spirit in the event”. Their previous group name is Syncbeat, and they later chose Swing Out Sister because they all hated the name! LOL! So excited that you have Twilight World too, just like the US 12” for Breakout, the US 12” and promo have more remixes… Read more »
Awesome post. Love this song DjPaul 🙂
Thanks Paul, have this one, but there’s nothing like one of your rips!
Aw thanks so much Antbee 🙂
Thank you so much… always loved SOS!
You’re welcome Venus De Milo 🙂
Thank you Paul. LOVE LOVE LOVE Swing Out Sister! This is a phenomenal track. It’s Better to Travel had some great tracks – I especially loved Twilight World. The U.S. commercial 12″ had an exclusive 12″ Remix (a.k.a. The World Travel Mix) by Bruce Forest and Frank Heller, which I remember being great. And then there was a “Special Club Mixes” U.S. promo, which I’ve only heard about with exclusive mixes:

Cheers!
Jesus H is that Zed from Police Academy (for seemingly no reason at all!) at the start of the NAD Mix?????!!
lol I don’t know who it is and I have no clue what he is saying either :0
Nice one Paul, I have no Swing Out Sister in my archive!!
Nice up…(Must grab the other stuff!)
Thanks Ex15 🙂
So, I’m sitting here at work, waiting to go home for the day, when the sudden urge came over me to check out, Burning The Ground. I’m so glad I did, I can’t wait to get home and download this song!! Paul, so looking forward to hearing versions I’m not familiar with. You are a Prince mate!!! I’m so glad you also took the day yesterday off Paul. You so deserve a break as you are always working your butt off bringing us the best of 80’s music. Thanks again and have a wonderful day Paul.
Jeff
Thank you Jeff. Yesterday I had what writers would call writers block lol. No matter what I attempted to rip I just couldn’t make it work so I decided to take a break 🙂
I love this. Paul hopefully you could post 12″ mixes of Twilight World and Where In The World if you have them. Thankx.
You’re welcome Omar. Pretty sure I have “Twilight World”.
If you happen to have the Vocal Dub, Classical Dub, Instrumental Dub, and Beat Your Sister Dub of “Twilight World” and could post them, you would make me one of the happiest men on the planet! 🙂 By the way, thank you for ALL of your awesome posts!!!
Hi Paul, like MMDD I too have been looking for this US 12 inch promo. Fairly difficult to get a hold on a clean mint copy, not many made.
Would you have this one in your collection?
‘Breakout’ is a great tune, but ‘Twilight World’ is one of my favorite songs by Swing Out Sister. I specially love the rich instrumental sections in this track, so I’m very very curious to hear this 1986 US club promo, featuring the Special Club Mixes:
1. Vocal Dub 4.52
2. Classical Dub 4.59
3. Instrumental Dub 6.33
4. Beat Your Sister Dub 3.03
Stefano, Some years ago I actually transferred all of these from a fairly clean vinyl album I obtained, but believe it or not, I misplaced the lossless digital files and can’t find them anywhere! All I have left are the mp3’s. I no longer have access to a turntable, so I’m stuck. Been kicking myself for the longest time about that, but hey, what can you do? If Paul in his kindness can provide these in lossless, then I can tell you I will make darn sure I don’t misplace those! By the way, the Classical Dub is probably my… Read more »
Hi MMDD, please don’t taunt me. I am so anxious to hear these rare mixes, but somehow I am not able to find them anywhere on the internet.
Hehee, a very amusing song in my life, thanks Paul.
BTW they re-recorded the chorus with new words for a jingle for Gary Davies (Radio 1 DJ). I’ll try and find it when I get home, though it might just pop up from a simple YouTube/Google search.
You’re welcome Jermajesty. Would love to hear that 🙂
Hmmmph, I have searched the length and breadth of the Internet all night and cannot find that Breakout Jingle anywhere. 🙁 I thought I had it downloaded but it seems not.
I did find another jingle Gary Davies used to use – a re-recording of Wouldn’t It Be Good:

Back in the day I always assumed it was Nik Kershaw singing it, but listening again now maybe it’s a soundalike… Maybe not…
Great song. Many thanks Paul.
Cheers!
You’re welcome Diego 🙂
