“What” is a song written by H. B. Barnum, originally performed by Melinda Marx and released in 1965.
British synth-pop/new wave duo Soft Cell released a cover of the song in July 1982 as the only single from their remix EP Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing. It became their fifth UK top-ten chart hit, peaking at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

Thank you, Paul!! I rejoice every time you post a Soft Cell / Mark Almond record. I really love this song and was very much perplexed that it didn’t get notice in America, only by their fans. I just adore Marc and Dave together. I so wish that their new album re-introduces them here in the US. They are extremely special to me. And again, the collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys is exquisite. It’s a musical wet dream for me!!!!
