Siouxsie & The Banshees – Peek-A-Boo (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“Peek-a-Boo” is a song by English band Siouxsie & the Banshees. It was released in 1988 as the first single from the band’s ninth studio album, Peepshow. Melody Maker described the song as “a brightly unexpected mixture of black steel and pop disturbance” and qualified its genre as “thirties hip hop”. “Peek-a-Boo” was rated “Single of the Week” in both Sounds and NME. Sounds wrote that it was a “brave move”, “playful and mysterious”. NME described it as “Oriental marching band hip hop” with “catchy accordion.” They then said: “If this nation was served by anything approaching a decent pop radio station, “Peek A Boo” would be a huge hit.”

“Peek-a-Boo” was one of Siouxsie & the Banshees’ most recognizable and popular singles; it was also the group’s first to chart in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, reaching the No. 53 in the week of 3 December. The song was very popular on alternative rock radio and received heavy play on MTV. In September 1988, Billboard magazine premiered a new Modern Rock Tracks chart, which measured radio airplay on US modern rock stations; “Peek-a-Boo” was the chart’s first No. 1 song. In the UK, “Peek-a-Boo” became their fifth Top 20 UK hit, peaking at number 16 in the Singles Chart.

Listening to this off my CD, it always sounds so sloooow. When this came out in ’88, I was DJ’ing at a collage station, and everything was pitched/sped up 2% (Common Top 40 radio trick) so when we dubbed it off my 7″ single on to cart for air play, it sounded a lot more “Bouncy”. I just used your rip to reencode it for my iTunes (speed: 1.02, multiband compression and then soft limit) so I can relive them old radio days!

I haven´t heard this in a while. It´s so wonderfully original and different. “Thirties hip-hop” is the perfect description. Almost no bass, drums backwards and a quirky voice. You just have to love it. Oh, and great b-side tracks, too.

Thanks, Paul. That year I had a severe crush on this song. Too bad I never ever could record it on a good tape. And, yes, this is an old forgotten gem.

Wow, thank you so much for a great share! Just in case, I’ll like to see here more Siouxsie rarities, for example, “The Passenger (Llllloco-Motion Mix)” 8:00 and “Kiss Them For Me (Snapper Mix)” 6:24, both tracks I never had a chance to grab a decent lossless version.

Wow, this is fantastic Paul. Lately I’ve been craving songs by Siouxsie & The Banshees, especially their special mixes. And this is a great song too for the “Witching Season” and I’m so happy about it. Love these sonic treats Paul!!!!

Can’t wait to hear this, Paul! The Silver Dollar Mix on this vinyl is almost 2 minutes longer than the Silver Dollar Mix on the The Best Of Siouxsie & The Banshees CD2.

Have a great day!
