Siouxsie And The Banshees – Cities In Dust (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“Cities in Dust” is a song by English rock band Siouxsie & The Banshees from their seventh studio album, Tinderbox (1986). It was released on 18 October 1985 as the album’s lead single. The “Cities in Dust” 12-inch vinyl was the first Banshees’ single release in the United States, on Geffen Records.

“Cities in Dust” peaked at No. 21 on the UK Singles Chart. Although not Siouxsie and the Banshees’ first song to enter the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, it was their first significant success, climbing to No. 17.

Although the song is about a Volcanic eruption it can also interpret to include the aftermath of nuclear war leaving Cities In Dust.

This was one of my first CDs.
The US Geffen CD came out in 1989 (oddly, 3 years after the LP).
To boost CD sales, they included 5 bonus tracks:
09 The Quarterdrawing Of The Dog 4:58
10 An Execution 3:50
11 Lullaby 3:34
12 Umbrella 4:11
13 Cities In Dust (Extended Version) 6:48

Great Post – like others have commented, it’s all about the B-sides and the extra tracks on their 12 inches as they are one of the few bands to consistantly provide new or rare mixes of existing tracks that are not available on the albums – case in point is one of my favourite Banshees songs on this release, the instrumental ‘Quaterdrawing Of The Dog’ – I just love that driving hypnobeat!

Thanks so much for posting this single. I used to have all the Siouxsie 12″ releases once upon a time and used to really like them because they always provided extra value by having non-LP b-sides and interesting remixes. Definitely a group worth revisiting. Great sounding transfer too, especially the 24-bit version. Thanks again.

One of the best of the decade, and packed a dance floor its day, everyone trying to sing along but not knowing the actual lyrics. Thank you, Paul!

Otro aporte a la colección, se agradece. Esperando por unos bailables de los 70s si es posible. Disculpa si soy muy pirigueño (asi decimos acá a la persona que pide y pide). Gracias

Hey Paul, thank you for posting this classic record. And thank you for being so thought-provoking during this week. Records like these have me pondering lots of things and I’m quite sure others can admit the same. Life can be so brutal and harsh with certain people in this world although I really like to think that good will triumph over evil. You celebrate light and love and I’m there with you as I truly believe most people are. I’m just praying for the best.

Jeff
