Burning The Ground Exclusive 1989

“(You’re My One and Only) True Love” is a single by Seduction. Although uncredited, the lead vocals and background vocals were performed by Martha Wash, with additional background vocals by Seduction.
In 1989, Wash recorded the song “(You’re My One and Only) True Love” as a demo, produced by David Cole who would later form C+C Music Factory. Cole later gave the song to the then-upcoming female group Seduction. The song appeared on Seduction’s debut album Nothing Matters Without Love, released in September 1989, retaining the use of Wash’s lead vocals and adding Seduction’s background vocals to the song. In addition, she was only credited for her background vocals and Cole remixed and altered Wash’s lead vocals of the song to make her voice less recognizable on the song.
“(You’re My One and Only) True Love” was released as Seduction’s second single in July 1989. The single became an unexpected success when it peaked at number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number three on the Dance chart. Wash would file a lawsuit against the producers and A&M Records for unauthorized use of her voice. The case reached an out-of-court settlement in December 1990.
Martha Wash was also uncredited as lead vocalist on tracks from Black Box, and C+C Music Factory.
Martha Wash did not appear in the song’s music video instead Seduction lip-synced to her vocals.

Thank you for uploading this cool song👍👍👍FREESTYLE LIVE❤️❤️❤️
I have to add an extra comment to the discussion. The dub version needs an extra special shout-out for its inclusion of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” sample. When I heard it, it gave me goosebumps! Gosh, I love the days of wild and creative sampling. Paul, kudos once again for a pristine rip that’s positively a work of art. I am so blessed by your presence in the world because so many shining works of art would be lost. From the artists themselves to the various groundbreaking sonic individuals that make records leap out of the speakers and into our ear-canals!!… Read more »
Ah Martha Wash, the unsung hero of dance pop! Glad she’s finally getting her due credit. Thanks for posting this Paul!! Btw, check out the movie Gung Ho, Martha Wash has a great tune unavailable anywhere else.
I remember this song, at the time I thought that it sounded like Milli Vanilli’s “Girl You Know It’s True” a bit hilarious and sad that both bands didn’t sing lead vocals on their hit records. But in the end, as a piece of art, you have a pop song with a good solid r&b vocal, Now producers will just use auto-tune and A.I. to bend their warble to forgettable soulless wallpaper.

De Nada 🙂
Martha was so abused around that time! Her lawsuits were much needed! I didn’t know about this track and lawsuit though, I just recall the Black Box and C+C fiasco’s… what a joke!
But Martha did get a record deal out of it, her solo album at the time was great fun, & as I recall 3 singles with various remixes!
I loved her solo album and let’s not forget her work with The weather Girls 🙂
Of course, and years of background vocals! ❤️🎶
It’s crazy how many divas were ripped off in the early dance days. I’m sure they all started innocent enough (on the back of sample-heavy Acid House), but once some of these songs became famous, the producers should have immediately reached out the respective artists and offered a share in the profits and fame!
That would have been the right thing to do for sure. Greed is a nasty thing.
Thank you SOOO much for this awesome post, Paul!! I love this track! Have a great day!!
You’re welcome.
Thank you, Paul, for an incredible post. I am so saddened reading about the mistreatment of Martha Walsh. Clivilles and Cole were excellent producers, but seeing this has certainly tarnished their legacy. I read Michelle Visage’s autobiography and she says that her experiences weren’t that great either. David Cole really was the genius, while his partner, not so much. You don’t hear of the guy anymore.
It’s cool that Roger Pauletta is involved with the editing on the single. I can’t wait to hear what he did.
Thanks, Paul, for a beloved song and 12-inch!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff.
Since David Cole’s death in 1995, Robert Clivillés has continued to produce independently, including work for the group MVP, an album released in 1996 on Columbia under the moniker Robi Rob’s Club World, and various other releases under different names.
Thank you, Paul, for this update on Robert Clivilles, I appreciate that. David Cole was such an excellent keyboardist, and his presence is sorely missed.
Jeff
Robi Rob’s Club World was/is actually an excellent album!
Thanks, Martika. I’ll have to check it out!!

“In addition, she was only credited for her background vocals and Cole remixed and altered Wash’s lead vocals of the song to make her voice less recognizable on the song.”
So he did it on purpose to screw her out of royalties?????!!!
That is why she sued them.
Thank you so much for posting this! This song/album always reminds me of summer back in the day. The band members got a bit screwed from their record deal, but they did make some great music. They certainly deserved better treatment..
I agree especially Martha Wash she was the voice behind so many great dance tracks in the late 80s and 90s.
