Rebbie Jackson – Centipede (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“Centipede” is the debut single by American singer Rebbie Jackson and the title track from her debut album, Centipede.

The song was written and produced by Jackson’s brother Michael Jackson. He and The Weather Girls also sing backing vocals on the song. It is Rebbie Jackson’s only single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and is her best-remembered song. The Weather Girl’s Martha Wash’s soulful voice is heard quite prominently throughout the song.

On the back of the single, Michael Jackson dedicated the song “to my mannequin friends”.

“Centipede” was sampled in Brand Nubian’s song “Let’s Dance”, found on their 1998 album Foundation.

Released in the late summer of 1984, the single climbed high on the Billboard R&B charts, peaking at #4 there and peaking at #24 in the main Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It was Jackson’s highest-charting single to date and her only single to enter the Hot 100, although she had several more hits on the R&B chart throughout the decade. The single was Gold-certified by the RIAA, selling 500,000 copies in the USA.

Just remembered that I might have grabbed this years back. Connected to my secondary Music NAS and sure enough it was there 🙂 “Spinning” it now!

This has the 1980s written all over it, including the video, but such a cool song none the less. I totally forgot about this version existing. The bridge is so nice whereas the single chops it in half. This song has so much ‘feel good’ about it. Thanks for sharing Paul.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Oh, I LOVE Centipede. Such a cool song. And the bridge is SO Michael Jackson. I pity my neighbors from across the street. They will listen to that 12inch a couple of times today 🙂
AWESOME.

And before I forget: THANK YOU 🙂

This is so much fun Paul!! I haven’t thought about this song in years and the last time I did hear it was a Muzak version played at a restaurant and how bizarre! These bugs freak me out. I did like the video game however. Yes, I’m rambling. And I won’t go anywhere near “The Human Centipede” film (the trailer alone scared me and left scars!) I digress, I do love this song and it’s a cute addition to a Halloween playlist. I’ve said it before: Paul, you take me back. Thanks for sharing the unexpected!

Jeff
