Ready For The World – Oh Sheila (The M&M Mix!) (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985

“Oh Sheila” is a 1985 single by Ready for the World. The song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the Hot Black Singles and the Hot Dance Club Play charts. It was the first of two chart toppers for the band on the Billboard R&B chart, preceding their 1986 number-one R&B hit, “Love You Down”.

The song is commonly misattributed to Prince, due to similarity to his vocal and musical style, as well as the belief that the song’s lyrics allude to frequent Prince collaborator Sheila E.

The use of a faux British accent during parts of the song was the preference of singer Melvin Riley Jr., who said “I like that kind of accent, so I thought I’d use that sound.”

I don’t remember this single but I do recall Love You Down as it received airplay in the UK.

John Morales was an interesting remixer, still is too.

Thanks Paul 🙂

Thanks for the great post, Paul! I absolutely loved this song back in the day and to this day was never aware of these mixes…likely because it’s an import for us USA people and none of the record stores had imports back in 1985 but also very odd I never heard it on the radio and the weekly remix shows. I still love the original extended version’s 4:26-5:15 segment where the beats are kind of doing a slapback echo effect and then the echo of the voice, too. Have a great day!

Due to personal issues at home, I’m sorry I’ve been a bit M.I.A. as of late. I did want to quickly chime in just to say thanks for this remix. Never knew of this mix before so it’s a real treat from you Paul. Can’t wait to crank this baby up really loud.

Thanks for so much Paul. I really enjoy what you do!!

Oh my how I love this song! I was beyond in love with Sheila E with posters in my walls & everything and a huge Prince fan and totally remember everyone thinking it was a Prince track when it first hit radio! LOL! Was not aware of remixes so super excited to hear that’s!!!! Thanks!!
