BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
Artist spotlight Australian band Pseudo Echo!
Periodically I will be doing blocks of singles by some of my favorite artists. For the next few days, I will be posting the singles that I have in my collection from Pseudo Echo most of these will be their U.S. 12″ singles which differ from singles released in Australia most of which I have already posted in the past. I hope you enjoy this run of singles from one of pop/new wave’s most underrated bands. They were so much more than “Funkytown”.
“A Beat for You” was released in the USA with two separate 12″ singles this is the first release which includes exclusive remixes by Paul Sabu, and Rusty Garner released in 1985 and produced by John Punter. The song originally appeared on the band’s debut LP Autumnal Park (1984).
For the U.S. market an updated 1987 version was included on the group’s follow-up album, Love an Adventure (1987). In the United States, the single did not chart.
To my knowledge, the two mixes included here are vinyl only.

Great Band, Great Songs, but again unfortunately without a cover. But I need covers for my database. And such paper sleeves are not particularly attractive. I have already designed some covers myself from your uploads. And I’ve often thought about offering them here. To celebrate the spotlight for Pseudo Echo, I’m now trying this with all uploads, and hope there’s more to come.
here it is and i hope you like it.
Thanks Paul!
As you know I’m a huge fan and got to see them perform last year. They even played my favourite ‘Lies are Nothing’
These versions of ‘A Beat For You’ have never been available in Australia. Thanks so much for sharing, I had only heard very mediocre rips of these in the past. Would love to hear other US exlusive mixes.
Also I just found out yesterday via the official Psuedo Echo Facebook page that ‘Autumnal Park’ issued in the US as ‘Pseudo Echo’ has 4 reworked tracks. I never knew! would love to hear these one day.
You’re welcome, Carl stay tuned my friend 🙂
I love Pseudo Echo … and I love the idea of focusing on a single artist, especially with bands like this, where the American singles differ considerably from the original recordings/remixes! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!
It should be fun, Martika 🙂
Thanks, I heard only Funkytown on the radio at the time. I fell in love with their other singles via your site, and bought the Love An Adventure deluxe 2-CD.
You’re welcome, Andrew. The deluxe edition was a bit of a letdown for me because the bonus mixes etc used mediocre Vinyl transfers.
Thank you Paul!! I am definitely down with the artist spotlight singles block! And Pseudo Echo is certainly deserving of it. I think other than MTV, my introduction to them was their song featured in Friday The 13th Part V. Like you mentioned, they are so much more than ‘that cover song to remain unnamed’, lol. Looking forward to all the tricks you have up your sleeves!!
“His Eyes” from Friday The 13th Part V is my favorite song by the band I wished they had released it as a single.
Wow amazing, my thoughts exactly. The song fit perfectly in that scene.
Love me some Psuedo Echo! As mentioned already it always blows my mind how some acts, while often mediocre, have a huge success, other amazing acts do not! Although I agree they were much more than Funky Town, their cover is one of the greatest cover versions of all time! How many acts can say that? That being said, it always irked me when a debut album of a non-American act isn’t really the album they made, but a compilation! Boo! They even did this to Fenech-soler in somewhat recent history. Debut album wasn’t released here, then their 2nd was,… Read more »
You’re welcome, ING. I agree “Funkytown” is one of the best cover versions ever. It’s sad when a great artist gets trapped in a one-hit wonder status.
Great selection and band. Like other acts (Wang Chung) springs to mind, they should of had a bigger following with their single releases.
Looking forward to these remixes.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome, Marco 🙂
I remember their “Listening” music video back in the day – staying up late just to get a chance to see it. I still much prefer the original (pre-Love an Adventure) more keyboard-centric version of Listening before they added the guitars in the later version – which lost something of the early 80s sound when they did. I’m a HUGE Pseudo Echo fan with every possible music video, the Autumnal Park, Autumnal Park Live and Long Plays 83-87 as well as nearly every 12″ and self-released title they’ve released. Thanks for this gem. And I don’t even speak the words… Read more »
They are so underrated they did lose something when they tried to appeal to the U.S. market with a more guitar-oriented sound. Still they are an amazing group that deserves some attention. 🙂
Great song. Thanks for bringing it out, dusting it off and sharing!
You’re welcome 🙂
Dynamite, Paul!! I am very excited you are doing this! Like you said, they were more than just, “Funkytown.” I’ll never understand why certain artists break through while others just languish. I’m so happy you’re here to give the world a second or third hearing! This is your special power, Paul! Thank you for being the musical ally to the music that has been missed or has fallen through the cracks, and deserves a re-spin! You are so important to dance music’s history.
All Hail our Saint Rip!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff. I just want people to listen outside of what they are used to there is so much great music out there. 🙂
