BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
“Raspberry Beret” is a song written by Prince and the lead single from Prince & The Revolution’s 1985 album Around the World in a Day.
The sound of the song expanded upon previous Prince arrangements, incorporating stringed instruments, Middle Eastern finger cymbals, and even a harmonica on the extended version. The song was also more in the pop vein than ever before, though the 12-inch single and video of the song feature a funky intro. Although the song was originally recorded on April 27, 1982, in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound, Prince drastically reworked it in September 1984 with The Revolution to give it more of an international sound. The string section comprised Novi Novog on violin, Suzie Katayama and David Coleman on cello.
While the song hit number 1 in Cash Box and reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. (behind “A View to a Kill” by Duran Duran), it only reached number 25 on the UK Singles Chart.

fantastic! thanks
Soooo excited to see this!~ Thanks so much, DJ Paul!
This is a great Prince song; I like the video for it. Prince has the band laid out like The ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA with women for the string section (which Jeff did when he started touring again in 2015) and two keyboardists doing the work of Richard Tandy.
Thanks for posting the song!!!
My favorite Prince song…plus it’s where Ian Broudie got the name “Lightning Seeds”…although of course that isn’t actually what he sings!
Thank you Paul, I always liked the pop side of Prince the most. Am amazed this did so terribly in the UK.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sleeve to this before, cool painting.
Funky track can u post pop life extended uk and fresh dance mix edited by sheila E Please
I am thrilled that you’re posting Prince again on your site Paul because there isn’t anyone who cares more about sound quality quite like you! I find this a fitting tribute to the Purple One himself. I especially love the B-Side. The radio station would include playing it along with “Raspberry Beret” on its playlist. There was no escaping Prince and l mean this as a compliment!
Everybody have a nice weekend!
Jeff
Thanks, Paul! This was such a huge song (at least to me) back in the summer of ’85! I can never get most of the lyrics out of my head. Especially “in through the out door, out door”
Thanks for the fond memories! Have a great day!
Thank you very much Paul. Raspberry Beret always makes me remember the merry-go-round at the annual fair in my hometown. Such a lot of fun being a Teenager 🙂
