Pink Lady – Kiss In The Dark (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1979

Side A

DISCO FRIDAY!

“Kiss in the Dark” was the 14th single released in Japan, and the first single released in America, by Japanese duo Pink Lady. The song was recorded for their debut American album, Kiss in the Dark. Pink Lady debuted the song in May 1979 on a Leif Garrett TV special. The song’s peak position in Japan on the Oricon chart was #19, and on the American Billboard charts was #37. This was also the first release of the duo in Japan which wasn’t in the top 10. In addition to the all-English version of the song which was a hit in the U.S., Pink Lady also recorded a bilingual version, with the chorus in English and the verses in Japanese.

Pink Lady became the first Japanese recording act to chart in America since Kyu Sakamoto (“Sukiyaki”) 16 years earlier. “Kiss in the Dark” reached #37 on Billboard magazine’s top 40.

In Japan the single sold 350,000 copies.

Does DJ Paul have a suitable football (soccer) theme song to upload if the USA get through to the last 16 of the Brazilian World Cup? They have a realistic chance. Played two games so far – one draw, one win. Four points so far.

One of those songs I heard back in 1979 not knowing who the artist was. Only a few years ago I finally found out through some music blog and heard it again. I love it, such a good song and not played to death so it still sounds fresh.

This is definitely a fun song and it’s a shame they didn’t do more of their Japanese songs in English; they’re actually quite fun pop. (And for those who haven’t seen any of “Pink Lady and Jeff,” there are clips on YouTube. Well worth watching for some VERY bad TV.) Thanks, Paul.

Pink Lady?? New to me, that’s for sure. Didn’t make it to Europe I guess.
Let’s see what this sounds like.

wow … I think the TV show they gave them, Pink Lady and Jeff, is one of the more scarring memories of my childhood. I was a snobby kid and didn’t enjoy good bad television until later.

Hey Paul, I vaguely remember this one. I think they were hoping Pink Lady would hit the USA with a big bang. I’m looking forward to downloading it and see if it rings a bell. I love how you reach deep into the disco catalog and pull out so many interesting things, not just the hits everybody knows, but the disco records that are more obscure and different than the run-of-the-mill ones that always find their way on budget CD compilations. You are a true archivist and musicologist Paul. Tip my hat to you as always! Have a great day… Read more »
