Paula Abdul – The Promise Of A New Day (US Cassette)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1991

“The Promise of a New Day” is the second single (and lead-off track) from American artist Paula Abdul’s album Spellbound. The song was written by Peter Lord and V. Jeffrey Smith. The single was released to radio while the hit “Rush Rush” was still at the top of radio airplay and the pop charts. It is an upbeat pop and dance-pop song that lyrically finds the singer feeling optimistic about a relationship as well as the lives of future generations.

“The Promise of a New Day” debuted at number 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, the week ending July 20, 1991, claiming the spot of Hot Shot Debut. The following week, the single climbed to number 26, with this week claiming the Greatest Airplay Gainer. The song hit number one on the chart on September 14, 1991, and ended the reign of Bryan Adams’ long-running number one hit “Everything I Do (I Do It For You).” The following week it fell to number five and departed the top 40 only four weeks later. It was Abdul’s sixth chart-topping single, and her last number-one single to date.

I have the UK cd single of this, although I’m interested to hear your rips. I liked the Vibeology single too, which had Hurley mixes.

Cheers Paul

Everyone used to joke that it was “the promise of a thin me” because of the way they stretched everything in the video, making the petite Paula look like she was over 6 feet tall! Ah, memories! I don’t know the info on this one, but I have a few cassingles that had versions or b-sides only available in that format!

Totally flew under the radar over here. Peaked at 86 in October ´91. I only have a Straight Up and a Forever Your Girl 12-inch as well a remix compilation on vinyl. Promise is a lovely song, though. And I agree that the West Coast 12″ remix is great! Thank you Paul.

Love Paula! She had a short run, but wow, what a run. Her single from the late 80s into the mid 90s produced some fine tracks and wonderful remixes. Thanks for this one, Paul. The West Coast 12″ is superb.

“Promise Of A New Day” is such a winner of a song Paul. It was one of my favorite Paul Abdul songs and it’s cool that you’ve given us another cassette-single. Thank you for such positivity with the music you post. It’s very well received.
