Paparazzi – Don’t Stay All Night (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

Welcome to Totally Obscure 80s, a new BTG series. This series is a run of artists who were lost in the abyss of 1980s music culture. This series may include artists who you have never heard of or obscure singles from well-known favorites. Either way, these records are ones that are favorites of mine. I think they deserve to be given a second chance. Who knows? You may discover a new favorite. So let’s open our minds and ears to some great lost 80s gems!

The Birmingham, England band “Paparazzi” are one of those bands that do not have much information about them on the internet. The four piece band definately took their inspiration from the New Romantic movement of the early 80s. They sound like clones of Japan, Ultravox, or Duran Duran. They only released two singles, and according to the record sleeve of this 12″, a forthcoming album was on the way titled, “Cold in a Warm Climate”. I don’t think MCA Records ever released it and the band became one who disappeared into the Totally Obscure 80s.

“Don’t Stay All Night” was produced by Thereza Bazar a British-Canadian singer, best known as one half of the pop duo, Dollar.

As I found in some private music sharing blog, the members are:

Michael Dorian – Vocals, guitar, piano/keyboards, songwriting.
Nicholas Eugovni – Keyboards.
David Manray – Bass, backing vocals.
Glyn Ricard – Drums.

And there’s more, seems that an “unofficial” CDr version of the “Cold In A Warm Climate” album does exist. https://www.discogs.com/Paparazzi-Cold-In-A-Warm-Climate/release/8066471

Bizarre. My mate Glyn was their drummer (and incidentally we both frequent a Rum Runner/Blitz Club themed night in Birmingham called Only After Dark which I guest DJ). I’m still trying to get a free copy of the unreleased album off him… The tight git.

Thanks for the upload!

Excellent idea for a series Paul – As an eighties teenager here in the UK I used to scour the record shops for second hand/bargain bin electronic 12 inch singles as there were literally dozens released every week – many artists you would never hear of again. Like the Italo-disco records of the same era, many of the b-side tracks were dubs and instrumental versions and remixes and that was often where the magic was – I look forward to your future posts!

What an a mazing post Paul. When I saw the name of the band it instantly struck a chord. I realized I had this sent to me as a promo 12″ back in the day. Long gone now sadly but this brings back memories of those golden days. I can’t wait too see what else you have up your sleeve!

I love this track and this is a new one on me too. I’m always fascinated most of the time how much 80’s synth slipped through the net.

Thanks Paul for the continued enlightment 🙂

Found this video in YouTube, singer and bass are definitely Japan-like. Keyboards are more in the Duran style but you are right, with that “uresque” guitars and “curriesque” piano parts this guys are like a Japan-Duran-Ultravox cocktail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMAsOkhvrJU I want more “Totally Obscure 80s”!

LOL ! Seriously Paul I would say more than 50% of of your recent posts have been “obscure” for me and i am crate digger with sizeable vinyl collection who spends all day everyday listening to hi-res 80’s rips ! Its just incredible how much amazing music was produced in that decade. Boggles the mind.

Cheers !

What a great idea! I hope you keep up this series Paul.

How about Eye Talk by Fashion? They weren’t a household name, though not exactly obscure either. But a great song to be sure (especially the 12″).

Keep up the good work – this is an awesome website!

xx John

Great idea! Thanks so much for sharing! I was able to track down a bit more on the band, and specifically lead member, Michael Dorian Band members: Michael Dorian – Singer, some guitar, some piano/keyboards, songwriter. Nicholas Eugovni – Keyboards. David Manray – Bass, backing vocals. Glyn Ricard – Drummer. From MICHAEL DORIAN in 2009: “We were signed to MCA on a long contract, having turned down Virgin and EMI and recorded the album with Thereze. Thereze was not in the band but she produced the album and even came to Morroco with us to shoot the video for ‘stop’.… Read more »

Might not exist, then. Per another poster’s info this video may be from their live set. Sweet track. Bass is awesome.

I love this idea Paul! Nice first pick. I had never known this band or track. Thanks for deciding to do this!

Wondering if you have or know this wonderfully beautiful obscure 80s 12″? https://www.discogs.com/Primary-Colours-Paint-Love-Blue/release/1256883

Yes it is very rare and sells for $100+. I have a NM copy I got recently. Maybe I could send it to you, but that’s one I would want sent back. The b-side Talking In My Sleep is also really good. It is kinda reminiscent of Modern English – I Melt With You with female vocals.

Brilliant rare new wave stuff – Pictures Of Love is with this track a lost 80s gem – hope to see that song too here one day. Thanks!

Wow Paul! I think I´m going to love this new series. I love to discover new bands. Never heard about this band but I´m pretty sure I will like it. Of course I know Thereza Bazar whose wonderful album “The big kiss” has been released for the first time on CD a few days ago. I have ordered it but I haven´t received it yet. Thank you so much Paul for this new discovery and I already wonder what´s coming next on this great new series.

What a great idea this is Paul!! I think it’s incredible to do such a thing. So many times records fall through cracks and do deserve a second (or third!) listen. I’m really looking forward to hearing this one. I love you tastes in music so I’m sure I’m gonna love this one. Thanks for doing these things. I can’t wait to hear more!!

Thanks, Paul. That’s some serious synth on this 12″! A question about your Totally Obscure 80s series…is this something you are going to sprinkle in every now and then like a “re-rip” or are you going to post Totally Obscure 80s stuff every day for the next 3 months (as an example)?

Thanks again!
