BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“Shame” is a song by British band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released as the third single taken from their 1986 album, The Pacific Age, although it is a re-recording made after the album’s release, presumably in early 1987, and was produced by Rhett Davies (as opposed to the original album version which was produced by Stephen Hague).
“Shame” was scheduled for release as a single whilst OMD were still on tour. The band had suggested “Stay” as a possible single from the album, but label Virgin thought “Shame” had more potential. The band relented, although feeling the album version was too slow, and recruited Rhett Davies to give the song more of a polish.
The B side Goddess of Love was lifted straight from the album The Pacific Age and was the song which was originally intended to be used for the Pretty in Pink movie soundtrack before the group came up with “If You Leave”, which was featured in the movie.
The single reached no. 52 on the UK Singles Chart. It has never been included on any of OMD’s singles compilation albums, making it unique to this release. The 7″ re-recorded version has never had a digital release.
A promotional video was made for the single and is included on the DVD of the CD/DVD release Messages: Greatest Hits.

Wonderful shares these past few days – thank you SO much!
I’m looking forward to hearing this song. I have never heard it before but love OMD!! Thanks for sharing!!
I believe Goddess of Love was nixed in favor of If You Leave after they changed the ending…if you watch people are dancing way too fast to be dancing to If You Leave, but Goddess of Love….now that bpm fits!
Very interesting, Paul. I had no idea about this unique 7″ mix. Thanks for all your hard work!
You’re welcome CakeSaint 🙂
Wow, I don’t know this one. Thought I knew all their singles! Thanks Paul, I will have to have a listen.
I think you will love it memoryboy 🙂
Thank you so much for this Paul. Ben waiting for the 7″ of this for years.
You’re welcome Gareth 🙂
Thank you so much! I’ve been wanting the 7″ version of this song ever since I bought the CD single 30 years ago (!) and realized it was not included.
You’re welcome Patrick 🙂
It was only a few years ago that I listened to this 12inch remix for the very first time. How could I miss that? I´ve always loved OMD. Locomotion was my first OMD 12inch if I remember correctly but my favourite OMD song will always be Souvenir. Gosh, just thinking of that brings me goose bumps.
A couple of years ago I bought their live dvd. I was amazed how good they were live. And they had so much fun themselves. Lovely to see.
I have a live show on one of their remastered cd’s they are phenomenal 🙂
OMG! I so love OMD. Huge thanks for this Paul. Been trying to get a special mix of “If you Leave” and wonder if you can possibly help my friend. It’s labelled as the Digital Mix and uses a hook from “I’m too sexy” by Right said Fred. The mix also has a couple of countdowns in it and the whole mix plays for about 6:30 mins. I wonder if it’s by one of the remix service providers such as Hot Tracks, Disconet or even Razormaid or maybe it was done by a fan. Anyway the mix is really good… Read more »
It may be from the remix service Techno Pop CD-03 they did a mix called “If You Leave
’93 Digital Remix” I don’t have it though. Several remix services remixed it in 1993 and 1997.
Ray,
I think the version you’re looking for is on the compilation “Techno Pop CD 3” found here:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Techno-Pop-CD-3/release/977829
But like a lot of those remix CDs, sellers are asking a pretty penny these days. You might also rip it from the YouTube video — the audio there seems to be of acceptable quality.
Thank you Paul. Love OMD .
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and your rips have been more than special to me. I’m so excited to be getting this 12-inch from you Paul. I really liked reading the description of the single and LOVE the idea that this hasn’t been on any compilations so far and hits its digital debut on Burning The Ground. Kudos most highly to you Paul and the specialness that comes with getting a ripped classic 12-inch from you. Amazing Stuff!!
Jeff
I know you have created some compilations out of my previous OMD rips Jeff. Now here is another to add to your set 🙂
Can’t beat a bit of OMD! This not appeared on the site b4? New album shouldn’t be too far away!! Many thanks for this
Looking forward to the new album.
