NEW 2024 Transfer
NEW Meticulous Audio Restoration
Originally posted November 18, 2014
“Secret” is a 1985 song by English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), released as the second single from their album Crush. Paul Humphreys sings lead vocals on the track. It became their second US Billboard Hot 100 entry, peaking at number 63, and also made number 34 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song was featured in the 1988 movie Arthur 2: On the Rocks and its soundtrack album; it was also re-released to radio in the US as the follow-up to The Best of OMD track “Dreaming”, approximately one month before the movie’s premiere. The new 1988 remix received renewed airplay on several US contemporary hit stations, but it did not re-chart on the Hot 100.
The video for “Secret”, directed by Andy Morahan, shows various vintage black & white film clips, including footage of the Beatles, interspersed with new black & white footage of Humphreys and a woman processed to look like old home movies; additionally, there are color scenes of Humphreys singing. The theme is that a woman deserts her current love interest (McCluskey) to return to the arms of her true love (Humphreys). McCluskey’s character observes the two lovers together and, though sad, gallantly accepts that his love interest should instead be with Humphreys’ character, before walking into the distance along the shore. The clip was filmed at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex.
The New 1988 Remixes were only released in the United States.

Thank you for this – love the single remix of this track.
I became a fan with Crush in 1985 too. For me the track ‘So In Love’ is a representative snapshot of 1985, similar to other classic tracks like Kyrie (Mr. Mister), One More Night (P. Collins) and Things Can Only Get Better (Howard Jones).
As some might know, they reformed around 2009 or so, and have made several good albums since – History Of Modern, English Electric, and The Punishment Of Luxury. Well worth checking out for synthpop fans. Or Kraftwerk fans.
Wonderful single! I was a big OMD fan throughout the 80s, and I was used to the 1st mix of this single. Very greatful for re-visiting this 12″, as I know it’s gonna sound better than ever! Thank you-thank you-thank you! 🙂 🙂
I always wanted to thank you for the HQ scans of the records’ original artwork, so I’m doing it now. I believe many of us here feel the same. Sometimes, the records have “unique” labels (especially UK 12s) specially designed for a certain release. It would be very COOL if you included those in the scans as well. Not plain company labels, only the special ones. I understand you want to save space for your uploads, but in some cases the labels are great art, too, so it would be very exciting if you considered to include those as well.… Read more »
Thank you for another rare 12″ Transfer, Paul!!! I’ve never heard these 88 remixes. I’m surprised “Crush” never received a deluxe edition re-release. It’s such a fantastic album.
I love early 80’s OMD, but the mid-late 80’s was a cool period too with various remixes included.
This new transfer is very welcome.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Love seeing OMD pop up! Love this band!
Thanks for this new transfer.
Than you Paul for meticulously ripping this for us. “Secret”.. both the original and the re-mix are some of my all-time favorites. I never get tired listening to them.
You’re very welcome, Chad 🙂
To add my two cents, I’m also a late bloomer to OMD. If You Leave was what put them on the map for me. But retrospectively I love the Crush album and singles. This new transfer comes as a pleasant surprise, as I’m not familiar with it! Looking forward to the new (for me) remixes and, as always, your unequaled quality beautiful vinyl transfers!! They’re really unmatched! Thank you Paul!!
You’re welcome, Retro Hound “Crush” is my favorite album too. 🙂
I just LOVE OMD since 1981 with Souvenir. Thank you Paul for this new rip. Secret is one of my prefered song ❤️
You’re welcome, Manu 🙂
Just what dugn said below, I was an OMD late bloomer as well. It was songs like this one that started my love affair with the band. And now, I just am obsessed them, even their vintage catalog. Because of you too, Paul, I’ve got to catch up on their dance discography of 12-inch discs!! The quality you bring out with your rips (I’d even like to call it, “your masters“) have really been a blessing to my ears. I’ve always loved stellar fidelity, and with you, I can rest assured that when you generously share your art with us,… Read more »
Thank you, Jeff OMD has some great twelves, especially their mid to later 80s output.
One of the greatest bands of the 80s – and a lovely song. Funny story: A friend turned me onto OMD in the early 80s. While I liked the bounce of Tesla Girls, I never went ‘all in’ over Electricity, Enola Gay, Joan of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) everyone else. I started to turn the corner with Secret, So in Love, We Love You and (Forever) Live and Die. Call me a ‘late bloomer’ with OMD. As much as OMD had issues with If You Leave, it was the hook for me. And I’ve loved everything ever since – and… Read more »
I was a late OMD bloomer as well. The first album I bought was “Crush” and I played it to death. My all-time favorite OMD record is “Dreaming”.
I was a mid-80’s OMD guy too. It really truly was The Pacific Age that made me fall in love with them big time (although I liked stuff before that, So In Love, etc.) – I’ve been a fan ever since, even the “solo” albums and The Listening Pool album, etc. But this remix, with its cleverly repurposed cover artwork, eluded me! Thanks for this!
You’re welcome, ING 🙂
