Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark – Dreaming (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

A. Front

“Dreaming” is a song by British band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released in 1988 as a single from their compilation album, The Best of OMD. It was the last single before the band split-up, with only Andy McCluskey to carry on working under the OMD banner, and not releasing another record for three years. While not overly successful in the UK (where it barely made the top 50), the song was the band’s second most successful chart entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching #16.

Stewart Mason, in a positive review for Allmusic, described the song as “dynamite”, and wrote: “[‘Dreaming’] is easily the group’s best single since 1983’s ‘Telegraph’…It’s a near-perfect pop song, perhaps the last great single by an ’80s synth-pop band.”

The cover art was designed by Stylorouge, with photography by Andrew Catlin.

All the single versions include “Satellite” as a B-side. The other B-side, “Gravity Never Failed”, was a bonus track on the CD single. This song was originally titled “Georgia” and dates back to the 1981 Architecture & Morality sessions. However, the band lost their favour with the song and was thus shelved, and the title “Georgia” was given to a new song and featured on the album.

Thank you very much once again Paul – I love OMD but I have to admit I am not crazy about “Dreaming”. “Satellite” is more interesting.
My favorite album is “Architecture and Morality” and I should really buy the Deluxe remastered version, my CD (although bought more recently) is from the 1980s and thus not remastered I believe.

Wow!! You did not but you definitely did. I thought I was Dreaming when I saw this posted this morning. Thank you very much Dj PaulT.

I saw OMD live in 2013 and they were beyond fantastic. Vocals were really solid and felt like no time has passed. 🙂

Thanks again for this post. 🙂

Two great OMDs in a row – that’s one hell of a comeback. Glad you’re up and running again. 🙂

Hello Paul,

first of all, good to hear that the surgery went well.
Now for the music: OMD is always a great choice. 🙂
I prefer the original extended version of “Dreaming”, but it’s nice to have the US club and the dub mixes, which are not very known in Europe.
“Satellite” is one of the best OMD non-album tracks and unfortunately not included on the B’Sides-collection “Navigation”. The same for the instrumental “Drift” (B-side of the original “Secret” 12inch), so maybe someday you can post this one, too.

Cheers

I thought the same thing about Satellite. I bought this on Amazon.com several months ago for that b-side. Before online music stores I could understand tracks being left off for the sake of space on the disc. Now? No reason they can’t expand the collection. Same for just about every band out there.

And… thanks, DJPT.

Thanks Paul for this!! I can always trust on you to give us the very, very, VERY BEST!! I’ve been, forgive the pun, really dreaming of this song for a long time. The club mix is fantastic and I’m thrilled to have it presented to us in your quintessential mastery!

When I look a bit deeper, it seems only Tesla Girls and We love You have versions that are vinyl only so far. You already published Tesla Girls, leaving only the dub of the 12 Inch of We Love You as the best remaster that is not yet on cd anywhere.

The Club Mix is also available on the unofficial
http://www.discogs.com/Orchestral-Manoeuvres-In-The-Dark-The-Remix-Collection/release/1368333
the other 2 versions are so far as I know vinyl only. I had only a crappy vinyl rip, great to trade them in for far better remasters!

Well, thank you, of course!
The unofficial cd that has the Club Mix probably used vinyl masters too, so yours is probably better in sound quality!
Did you have time to look at Private Lives – Living In A World Upside Down by the way?
