Remembering our OLIVIA on what would have been her 76th Birthday.
“Soul Kiss” is a song recorded by the English-born Australian singer Olivia Newton-John for her twelfth studio album, Soul Kiss (1985). Originally, “Soul Kiss” was a standby song for the album, but Olivia fell in love with the track, and it was released as the lead single from the album on 25 September 1985 by MCA Records. The song was produced by John Farrar and written by Mark Goldenberg.
“Soul Kiss” reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated November 23, 1985. It marked Olivia’s twenty-first top-twenty single in the US.
The music video for “Soul Kiss,” directed by David Mallet, showcased a different side of Olivia, featuring scenes of her on a red satin altar-like table and engaging in suggestive interactions. The video also included reenactments of classic kiss scenes from black and white films “Wuthering Heights” and “Casablanca.” It’s worth noting that Olivia was pregnant during filming, and her then-husband Matt Lattanzi played the male lead in the video.

It’s always fun to see an Olivia post pop up here, because she’s your favorite, isn’t she? Or one of your top artists? I love Olivia as well. Thanks for sharing Paul!
These young half-naked starlets today can learn a lot from Olivia. This video (and cover art) is sexier than any of the scantily-clad performances nowadays.
Thank you for another amazing 12″! I must admit I was not all that familiar with Olivia’s music growing up. However, I was blown away by her live performance 7 years ago, when a few friends convinced me to come along. She was well into her 60s at that time, but looked like she was in her 20s and put on an amazing show!
Olivia was a trendsetter she never had to oversell herself. She was the very definition of a true performer.
I don’t remember these remixes by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbeiro. I have the album version from the US LP gatefold album.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome, Marco 🙂
Love Olivia. Love this track. She was one of a kind. In concert she just exuded love and happiness to the audience. I wish they’d continue with the deluxe remasters projects.
I don’t think that will happen. Primary Wave seems uninterested in deluxe editions.
Lame. Tease us with 2 then stop? 😑😩
I really like this underrated single and that cover!! Red hot!! And like Jacob mentioned, that sultry video too is full of innuendos! I love how with this album, Olivia completed her transformation from squeaky clean image in the 70s to full-on siren in the 80s! And then backed off that image for her next album (I love the partnership with Elton John on The Rumour, which I have your posts). This single actually charted higher than I realized. Thanks for this tribute and for remembering Olivia on her birthday! Thanks a million Paul!!
You’re welcome, Retro Hound. Olivia paved the way for other artists even in her early 70s career she opened the door for crossover artists.
THAT VIDEO! is so sexy and rivals Madonna on her best day Olivia was the original Pop Princess! The innuendo in the video is so brilliant the foam squirting out of the cylinders etc. Oh, and her hubby Matt was such a hunk. The song itself is pure pop bliss the production and musicianship are stellar not to mention ONJ’s vocals are fire. Also, your new transfer sounds better than it ever has crystal clear and dynamic. Thank you, Paul.
Thank you, Jacob I am so pleased that you enjoyed this post. 🙂
Hey Paul, thanks for bringing this Olivia classic back from the archives! I love the track so much. I was in college and our radio station played Adult Contemporary during the daytime hours, so this was big at our station. I remember first seeing the sleeve and thought to myself, this is quite hot! The dance mix is great, and I really love the dub version, so I am thrilled to be getting a new transfer of the vinyl.
Thanks, Paul, for keeping Olivia’s song legacy alive on your site. I miss her so very much.
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff. I thought that Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero did a fantastic job of bringing out the sultry vibe of this record. The video is amazing too 🙂
That they did, Paul! I love that dub version too because there is so much of her vocals left in. Just gorgeous, sensual vocals, percussion and that sexy saxophone. The instrumental too deserves praise. I almost imagined, Sade, and her band, playing on the track. It’s a great soundtrack for lovemaking!!
Phew!!!
Jeff
