Olivia Newton-John – Livin’ In Desperate Times/Twist Of Fate (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

NEW 2020 Transfer!
Meticulously Remastered!

Originally posted: August 31, 2012

“Livin’ In Desperate Times” was the second single released from the soundtrack to the film 1983 “Two Of A Kind” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Produced by David Foster “Livin’ In Desperate Times” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 25, 1984. The single remained on the chart for five weeks peaking at #31 the single also reached #43 in Canada and #81 in Australia.

In the USA, Canada, and Sweden the song was released as a 12″ single backed with the US #5 hit “Twist Of Fate” which had been released earlier as the first single from the soundtrack “Two Of A Kind”.

**The 12″ Mix of “Twist Of Fate” is exclusive to the US, Canada, and Sweden 12″ singles and differs from the version released previously in other countries which had a cold ending to the mix. For this 12″ the track is about ten seconds shorter and the ending fades out. I have been listening to this 12″ for decades and never realized that two mixes were issued. As a disclaimer I am pretty sure that in my previous post of this 12″ in 2012 I used the cold ending version by mistake, so the fade version has never been posted before.

Paul I’m confused as to how you could have “used the cold ending version by mistake” if you work as one assumes you do…i.e. you get the record you want to record and upload, you clean it, play into your computer, you edit and post…? I have your 2012 upload and yes it does have the cold ending. I also have rip of ‘Twist of Fate (US 12” Promo)’ and I am pretty sure you uploaded that the day before (30 August). That also has the cold ending. Did you perhaps get the A side of that mixed with the… Read more »

Wonderful song. Twist of Fate got me through a serious illness, it’s about beating a disease, a setback and surviving, both songs are great for these times, but Twist of Fate will empower you to be brave and marvel at your survival!

Yes, in a romantic context and fantastical concepts of God, angels and even the threat of a humanity, life, earth resetting cataclysm of a flood.

I saw the movie in theaters back then, fun movie, been a while since I’ve seen it again, defiantly want to rip the VHS for that retro look soon!

Thanks so much for this one! This has been one of my favorite Olivia songs since I first bought the Two of a Kind soundtrack in 1983. It’s such a perfect song for right now, too. I’ve downloaded it from you before, but I’m sure this new rip is even better!

Great post, Paul! I’m not very familiar with the A side (and it sounds a lot like The Pointer Sisters!). I love the Twist Of Fate mix! Have a great day!

Thank you for that Paul. It took me a minute to *get* the very à propos post raison d’être…!

I had to check my own original canadien 12″ to make sure what version It is as I didn’t know there was 2 different finale either…

Where did the cold stop version appeared on? I thought the only 12″ available was this one and the rest was only 7″ versions.

Oh you’re right… I always forgot about the japanese 12″ with the Koala Blue cover as I never saw it before downloading it here.

This new remaster sounds better than the one from 2012 (and the japanese Twist Of Fate 12″). Is it the same copy as the 2012 one or is your equipment better than before you think?
