“I Need Love” is a1992 single produced by Giorgio Moroder and recorded by English-born Australian singer, songwriter and actress Olivia Newton-John. The track was one of four new songs recorded for Olivia’s third Greatest Hits compilation Back To Basics: The Essential Collection 1971-1992.

A safe-sex anthem about wanting love before sex “I Need Love” was meant to be a comeback for Newton-John however just as the song entered the Billboard charts Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time. A worldwide concert tour that had been scheduled was cancelled and Olivia was unable to promote the single. At the same time, Olivia’s father also died from liver cancer.

On July 11, 1992 “I Need Love” peaked at #96 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #44 on the US Dance chart. In the UK “I Need Love” peaked at #75.

Do you remember posting the US Promo CD Single way back in February 2008 Paul? Pre-flac. Back then you were posting in glorious variable rate mp3! lol.

I was hoping you might remaster this 1992 ONJ classic, and here it is. This 2023 remaster sounds much better than your original rip too with your new turntable etc.

I have the U.S CD Maxi-Single of this single which included a Shep Pettibone mix of “The Rumour”

Thanks Paul 🙂

Thank you Paul for all the time and care you put into this new transfer!! Boy did we need Olivia in the 90s. Instead all we got was darkness with few exceptions. This transfer means even more knowing how much she means to you. Thank you!!

Thank for the reworking on this one…and expanding it as well. Just a bit confused as to which tracks come from which release? The first 6 tracks follow the Aussie promo not the US promo as that has Warm and Tender at B3…if you go by Discogs…? Is Discogs wrong? There does seem some disparity between the sleeve, which shows the Club Edit at B3, and the label which shows B3 as Warm and Tender.

Also where is the club edit with fade from Paul?

Ah right so you are saying you amending the back cover image to match the aussie track list? Thanks for clarifying…and it didn’t even occur to me you recreated the fade version from vinyl. But understand why…CD would sound wrong against the other tracks due to different mastering.

Thanks, Paul! Tommy’s Deep Need for Love Mix is his finest hour (that’s really saying something) and one of the best house tracks of all time. Essential.

I was lucky enough to have seen her live a few years before she passed away (I saw her in 2017). You would have never known she was sick or almost 70 years old! She put on a fantastic show!

Phew, Paul!!! You must have worked your butt off on this!! We’re not worthy!!! I am so grateful to you for re-ripping this entire 12-inch and bonuses!! Many kudos for the Hot Tracks NRG For the 90’s bonus cut too!! Makes me lament that Hot Tracks is no longer in business. Remix Services just aren’t the same as they once were. Such a shame that this wasn’t bigger. Maybe you’ll start a renaissance for a look back into Olivia’s “Club-Ography.” Hey, if “Running Up That Hill” could re-chart after all these years, then this can too. What makes this super-special… Read more »

Obviously I always download your ONJ transfers, she is still always like a breath of fresh air every time I hear her voice, but it will be fun to compare the old transfer to the new one!

I didn’t realize how poorly all of this had timed out release wise. What a tragedy. A greater presence by Olivia in the 90’s would’ve lifted some spirits from the glut of negativity that was popular at the time!

Thanks again!

Thanks for these lyrics. Sure, beats matter, but words do too!
