New Kids On The Block – You Got It (The Right Stuff) (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“You Got It (The Right Stuff)” is a 1988 single from New Kids on the Block. The lead vocals were sung by Jordan Knight and Donnie Wahlberg. The second single from the group’s second album Hangin’ Tough, it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in early 1989, while topping the UK charts in November 1989. On the album, it was simply listed as “The Right Stuff”; the change to the single was likely to avoid confusion with Vanessa Williams’ debut hit “The Right Stuff”, which charted earlier that year. A Spanish version of the song was made (“Autentica”) and peaked at number 11 in Spain.

The single appeared in the Top 40 for the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart the week of January 14, 1989, rising from number 45 to 37. “You Got It” reached its peak of number 3 the week of March 11, 1989. Altogether, “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” spent 5 weeks in the Top 10, 8 weeks in the Top 20, and 13 weeks in the Top 40. The song was number one in Australia in August 1989, and in the UK (on its second release) in November 1989. On March 29, 1989, the single was certified Gold. In the music video, Jordan Knight is seen wearing a Bauhaus T-shirt. The song ranked as number 92 on VH1’s 100 greatest songs of the ’80s.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much controversy that Bauhaus t-shirt caused at my school. We’d just got into Bauhaus the year before, and this was absolute sacriledge.

These days I’ve been waiting patiently for the opportunity to wear a New Kids t-shirt to a Bauhaus concert.

Have you heard the Weird Al parody of this called The White Stuff? It’s his ode to Oreo cookies. Great listen if you haven’t.

Can’t say that I was really into this genre of music although this is a well produced song. Ok,I admit I was tapping my feet a bit as I listen to this.

The most remarkable thing about this band was the Wahlburg brothers and the success they had after New Kids. Donnie became a pretty decent actor (better than his brother in my opinion) while Mark became uber famous and rich as an actor. And both are big time producers especially Mark who has brought some very successful shows to cable TV.

Unlike Jeff I was just too uncool. I LOVED that song and still do. Have the 12inch, of course, and my favourite version is my very own simple mix-up between the instrumental and the long version. Such a cool groove. Oooooh, this must be played LOUD. Makes you wanna groove along, doesn´t it?

Ah, being young when this song came out, I tried to act, I think, cooler than I really was by not liking this song. I was into Industrial and Dance Oriented Rock and I’ll admit that I was bit of a musical snob. It was years later that I DID admit to myself that New Kids On The Block were okay and I do like their music. Paul, it’s great to have the music of my youth re-introduced by you. I really like this song and I can’t wait to download it.

Many thanks,

Jeff

Post Script: Thanks again for yesterday’s Sweet Sensation record. Like others, someday I hope you’ll reach back into their catalog and do your magic on other tracks. I love all the quality you bring forth!
