Neil Young – Sample And Hold (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

a-front

“Sample And Hold” is a single by Canadian musician and singer-songwriter Neil Young, released in 1982 from the album Trans on Geffen Records. The release was a departure for Neil Young who was best known for recording Folk/Rock. “Sample And Hold” is a new wave/space rock track complete with a vocoder distorting Young’s vocals. Young’s direction was influenced by the electronic experiments of the German band Kraftwerk, but more importantly he felt that distorting his voice reflected his attempts to communicate with his young son Ben who was born with cerebral palsy. While the album Trans was a top twenty hit in the US “Sample And Hold” failed to chart.

Hi there, long shot – but was wondering if this could be made available again. Particularly want to hear the Dance Remix of Sample and Hold after so many years

So glad to find this one here. This is the weirdness that makes me a Neil fan. Thanks for posting it. BTW I see the Fun With Vinyl blog is gone so that’s another great site gone in the past two weeks. I hope you plan to keep going here for as long as possible.

I seem to think there was a 12″ version of Mr. Soul done also. I know the 7″ is two different mixes, BOTH different from the LP version AND the 12″ version here. Think I still have my 12″ and 7″ versions..plus this, too. I have big Neil fan from 1966 onwards… always LOVED this record couldn’t see why I wasn’t given a chance.

Interesting to hear there is an ‘escaped 8 minute version on CD. Just like Neil or record company to do it and not know. LOL

Thanks for posting this! It’s one of my all time faves & I do love the album as well. Neil was really ahead of his time with some of Trans’ ideas. We R In Control & Computer Cowboy are also good examples. For years this one was a tough find on vinyl since it’s sales were quite poor, but copies are easier to find in the last few years. I’ve never seen a U.S. stock copy with the correct tracklist on the back cover. However, I did find a copy some years back from Columbia House that is correct. A… Read more »

DJPaulT,

When I saw on FB that you were taking blog post-suggestions in exchange for FB Hillary-support posts, I did my best to challenge you.

Boy howdy, did you deliver!

Thank you so very kindly!!!

Roky

Nice one Paul. I would not have guessed Neil young would be into electronic music, until I saw a documentary where he was talking about how innovative Human League were as well as showing him jam with Devo… interesting stuff. Nice when artists are willing to take risks and follow their inspiration.

Thank you Paul for these ones. Two Dance mixes from Trans. I’ve always loved this album, specially “Computer Age” full of vocoder. By the way, the CD version of Trans includes an alternative version of “Sample And Hold” clocking at 8’03” instead of the 5’09” album version.

Although I consider myself a Neil Young fan I can admit that his track record isn’t exactly perfect. Trans-era Young, however, was not the failure it potentially could have been – I’ve always really enjoyed the album. Thanks for this post!

I’ve always been a fan of the Trans LP, the strangest album of Neil’s very strange Geffen period. I look forward to hearing this 12″ again. Thanks!

Once again Paul, you give me chills of ecstasy with your selections. I always wanted to hear this song as I remembered when the album came out, it was REALLY DIFFERENT for Neil Young. So many of my friends hated electronic music and were all into, what I like to call “Fossil Rock” and not that there was anything wrong with the classic rock genre, but I was becoming into my own tastes with all the experimental electronic dance music that was coming from Europe and other countries. I am pleased as punch to have this from you. I love… Read more »
