BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980
DISCO FRIDAY!
“Lump” is the debut single by former Parliament-Funkadelic drummer Jerome Brailey and his band Mutiny. The single was released by Columbia Records in 1979. The single was released a year after Brailey left P-Funk due to a financial dispute. The track was included on the 1980 soundtrack of the psychological thriller “Crusing” directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino. The film is loosely based on the novel of the same name, by New York Times reporter Gerald Walker, about a serial killer targeting gay men, in particular those associated with the S&M scene.
“Lump” is also included on Mutiny’s debut album Mutiny On The Manship.
Normally this 12″ promo containded the same track on both sides but I created a special version containing dialogue from the film for the intro of the b-side.

Once I try to open the downloaded .rar file, I receive a message that says, “Please enter the passphrase for this archive.” Unfortunately, “burningtheground” doesn’t appear to be the required “passphrase.” Am I missing something?
Thank you for posting this great song. I saw “Cruising” for the first time in 2011, and I can see why it’s been reevaluated by critics since its original release; William Friedkin really knows how to get under your skin. The ambiguous ending is terrific, as is Friedkin’s use of multiple actors as “the killer,” including the actor who plays the first on-screen victim.
Paul, you are a genius!!! Thanks for introducing me to such a bad-ass funk jam. Awesome record and now I want to see the film “Crusing.” I was a little kid when it came out and I was well aware of its controversy because of what I’d hear on the news. I was always intrigued by it, but couldn’t ask my parents to see such a movie. I had no clue at the time about the subject matter, but I felt a compulsion to see it when I was old enough. Sadly, I forgot about the picture. It’s great that… Read more »
You’re welcome Jeff I know the film got released on DVD a couple years ago not sure if it’s still in print. It’s always been a favorite of mine. The critics trashed it at the time but I do think it deserves some attention. I did plan that this would be a nice follow up to the Nightmares In Wax post I am so happy that you like it 🙂
This is new to me too, but the story behind the single intrigued me. And I trust your recommendations, Paul. Thanks!
Gonna delve in and investigate!
Hope you like it Ric. Please let me know what you think. Have you seen the movie?
I’ve never seen the movie. I think it was not imported here back then because of the content.
The jam is hot, and reminds me of Prince. Or was Prince “inspired” but it? LOL!
This is one my favorite tracks of all time. It really jumped out at me when I saw first saw the film in the theatre and got me get into Mutiny. It’s SO funky! I wish it would get an extended remix by some modern mix masters. There are other good tracks on the OST as well, especially those by John Hiatt and Willy DeVille (three!).
Hi PFerrari it is a great soundtrack. I almost ripped it but decided to post this promo instead. I love the Will DeVille track “Heat Of The Moment”.
I was 15 when I saw this movie at a drive-in in Chillicothe, Missouri back in 1979. I don’t remember the soundtrack, but I do remember the dialogue. At the time, I had no idea what it meant. Great track, and your addition is perfect. Thanks!
Kookoo it’s one of my all-time favorite movies. Just watched the DVd last night and it inspired this post. I never saw it on the big screen wish I had but I think I was around 10 or 11 years old when it was released. I found it much later on VHS and loved it.
“Lump” isn’t a track I’m looking to add to my library, but I’m glad you’re posting such a wide variety of tracks. It’s always fun to visit the site to see what new songs you’ve made available.
This one was mainly for my enjoyment because I really like the movie and it’s soundtrack. I was hoping to open the minds of others to this great music 🙂
