Madonna – Who’s That Girl (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“Who’s That Girl” is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from the soundtrack album of the motion picture of same name. It was released on June 30, 1987, by Sire Records as the first single from the album. While shooting for the film, then called Slammer, Madonna had requested Patrick Leonard to develop an uptempo song that captured the nature of her film persona. She later added the lyrics and vocals to the demo tape developed by Leonard, and decided to call both the song and the movie “Who’s That Girl”.

Featuring instrumentation from drums, bass, and stringed instruments, “Who’s That Girl” continued Madonna’s fascination with Hispanic culture by incorporating Spanish lyrics and using the effect of double vocals. Although it received mixed reactions from reviewers, the song became Madonna’s sixth single to top the Billboard Hot 100, while peaking atop the charts in countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Ireland and Belgium. It was also nominated for “Best Song From A Motion Picture” at the 1988 Grammy Awards and “Best Original Song” at the 1988 Golden Globe Awards.

Thanks for these. Amazon reviews of the CD single re-issue say the sound quality is quite poor, and your transfers sound good to me.

Hi Paul !, If you want a bit of ‘Spanish Overdose’ – you could do a lot worse than get this track. http://www.discogs.com/Bruni-Pagan-You-Turn-Me-On/release/640916 this was out a couple of years before Madonna’s tune & is itself a Companion release to Rick James’ English Language song You Turn Me On. On which Bruni Pagan makes an appearance. The full 12” & flip-side Instrumental have never made it to CD/download – yet. This Spanish Version was on CD briefly though a little clipped I think. I have myself a rip of the [Fabulous -like a different song] Instrumental of it but it’s… Read more »

Brilliant, Paul! There are so many 12″s in my collection featuring the amazing remixing skills of Thompson & Barbiero – their beats are so propulsive and rhythmic, and really turned this kinda unassuming song into a monster!

Thanks, Paul! This single was THE single of my summer between high school and college; don’t even get me started on the accompanying tour and how many hours I spent on the phone trying to get tickets through old-school Ticketmaster. Thanks to you, I have only 2 Madonna twelve-inchers not yet in digital quality.

Great synchronicity Paul, as yesterday I was thinking about your restored Madonna 12-inch collection, which are glorious rips and audio splendour. Thanks for this one. So much Madonna I missed while growing up (there was so many 12-inch discs I could buy and the ones I bought were mainly alternative and new wave types of things) so I am intensely grateful to you for providing them to us. You are so incredible Paul. I can’t thank you enough.

Jeff
