I am with you Madison-chan. R&B, Funk, Disco, Soul, Freestyle, (the last one I was unaware was a genre until this decade, but includes artists like Will to Power “Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley” “Say It’s Gonna Rain” (1988), Exposé “Point of No Return” (1985/1987), The Jets “Crush on You” (1986)). I miss hearing Gladys Knight & The Pips, Cameo, Earth Wind and Fire, George Clinton & P-Funk all-stars, Stevie Wonder, The Mary Jane Girls, Rick James, Sade, The Gap Band, Atlantic Starr, Chi-Lites, D Train, One Way, Lonnie Gordon, Jocelyn Brown, Stephanie Mills, Alexander O´ Neal, Con Funk… Read more »

Wow! 1984, I was a young 15 years old, very naive, gullible, trusting person, and I loved Kool & The Gang. Thank you for another one-of-a-kind Burning Remix Paul. These songs always sound better when heard this way, remixed, extended, and on vinyl. I agree with Jeff. R&B from Kool & The Gang and their peers of the 70s and 80s was so much better than the derivative of the genre that is performed now, I seldom hear new R&B that I find appealing, but there is one here and there that is a standout work. I learned from Paul… Read more »

Just wanted to let you know the 7″ version on this record is also the remix in shorter form as the 45rpm didn’t have the same mix – Tom in Oz

This is one band I definitely regret never seeing live. I bet their concerts were real parties. Thanks for a great rip.

Buen tema, de aquellos años 80, era un tema esporádico en las radios locales, en una época de mucho funk. Gracias por el aporte

This track and this band has a lot of great memories. In my personal collection, only Madonna do I have more 12″ singles of than of Kool & The Gang. I have 11 of these singles (this one being one of them and I have played this to a point of nearly wearing the grooves out) and while some of the original members have since passed the rest of the band and their extended family and ensemble is fun to watch in concert as they STILL to this day put on an awesome show. This track is one of my… Read more »

Thanks for the terrific post Paul!! Probably Kool & The Gang’s best effort at mixing rock/pop with R&B. And who can deny the video’s clear influence by a certain Michael Jackson, especially JT Taylor’s appearance! Keep up the great work.

Kool & The Gang can do no wrong in my book! 🙂 Classic track from the 80s that is often overlooked in 80s flashback shows. This song (as well as the whole Emergency album) was played relentlessly in my early teens. Buy the Emergency Remaster for a ton of remixes if you like Kook & The Gang. Back when this was released I wish they had released a Dub…it would have been so perfect with how they remixed this using echos and breaks. This Radio Edit claims 3:49 while the Radio Edit I have is 4:06. Probably just a longer… Read more »

So love how you take us back, especially to a band that really meant a lot to me. Kool & The Gang were so prolific in the 1980’s and they’re still resonating with us today. I mean, how many weddings can you go to without hearing their “Celebration” song? Unfortunately, that song is very tired, but it does create new fans who do get introduced to it. I am so happy for “Misled” Paul. I so miss the R&B of the last several decades compared with today’s incarnation of it. Mind you, there is a gem that comes along every… Read more »

Yes, long before the DJ circuit declared that Celebration really should be pulled from all weddings due to overplay (around 2001) I was saying so back in the late 80s. Great song but just kills me it’s played at any event that is fun and seems to be a must at 100% of weddings.

Grab the acappella of Celebration if you wish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVc27MZvffo Maybe someone will make a terrible Trap remix and people will never want to hear the regular song again. 🙂
