Klymaxx – Meeting In The Ladies Room (US 12″ Promo)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985

“Meeting in the Ladies Room” is a song recorded by Klymaxx for the MCA Records label, and the title track from their fourth album. It was written by Reggie Calloway, Vincent Calloway, and Boaz Watson. It was released as a single, reaching number 4 on the Billboard R&B chart, 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

The success of this song helped their Meeting in the Ladies Room album reach Platinum status. The song’s music video was directed by Gerald Casale of Devo and featured an appearance from a then-unknown Vivica A. Fox. The song was also included on the MCA Records motion picture soundtrack for 1985’s Secret Admirer—Billboard named the song #85 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time. The song was also featured in an episode of the FX series Pose and in the third season of Logo TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race. In addition, a comedy sketch parodying the song was featured in an episode of Saturday Night Live as part of their forty-fourth season, granting the group and the song newfound popularity.

The Instrumental Version is Promo only and exclusive to this release.

Hey Paul, since you opened the door for Klymaxx tracks, I noticed Wikipedia is sort of incorrect: They confuse the reader by saying its their 4th album at one point, then later saying it’s their 3rd. MITLR is the 3rd album they RELEASED, and the 4th they RECORDED because the third album Girls In The Band was withheld and for whatever reason(s) has never been released commercially. Do you by chance have the 12″ extended promo version (5:58) of their massive international hit “I Miss You”? I realize it’s a 74 BPM ballad, but it was a #5 US pop… Read more »

Hey Paul, the charts just don’t tell the real story of this song, nor Klymaxx’ popularity here in L.A. back in the day. This was a monster radio hit played on multiple formats thanks to “Lil Louil Silas” remixes. There are at least 3 “radio versions”: The one Paul posted (5:18) used on the 20th Century Masters compilation; and a rare special promo radio edit (S45-17003) (intro 0:19 / 3:24) probably editing out the rap open for pop formats as this exists nowhere else I can find. There’s the common 7” hit single remix (intro 0:11 / 3:59), and the… Read more »

I saw those, but didn’t want to take a chance since the Lil Silas mixes are already the bomb.

The only reason why “Meeting In the Ladies Room” is such a great track is that this is basically a Midnight Star jam produced by the legendary Reggie Calloway. The funk factor is evident here. Driving syncopated beat with those characteristic electronic Simmons toms, funky bassline and choppy rhythm guitars is the signature Calloway production sound of the time when Midnight Star was king in the US R&B charts. Everyone wanted to be a Freak-A-Zoid back then, including Klymaxx. This track is also faster like their other hit “The Men All Pause”, which mixes seamlessly into all the break dance… Read more »

Love it!! Such a great jam… similar groove to Kool & The Gang’s Emergency if you ask me. This group was so hot with their album of the same name. In the mid 80’s all forces seemed to collide between commercial and artistic excellence to give the best era of pop & rock ever in my humble opinion, this album being no exception. Of course, I Miss You was HUGE! Thank you Paul, looking forward to the remixes!!

I wanted to add, almost everything Louil Silas Jr. touched turned to gold! Remixer on so many great R&B, Dance/Club hits.

Classic track! Klymaxx wanted to be the female version of The Time as I recall! The skit with Halle Berry 😍 is dead on fantastic and hilarious!
Thanks again!

This is such a great song, and it’s incredible to consider that Klymaxx all played their own instruments (and a little disheartening to know that there has not been an all-female funk/R&B band since then). The attitude and the lyrics, whenever this song came on there was NO WAY you weren’t going to head to the dance floor, it was just soooo catchy with that funk-tastic groove! All kudos to Bernadette, Joyce, Lorena, Lynn and Robbin (I don’t speak of the other one due to all the drama she has caused). Thank you for sharing this Paul, it’s a true… Read more »

AHHHHH hahahaha, do you know how many years I went not knowing WHAT THE HELL SHE WAS SAYING IN THAT INTRO? I had no idea what a Yamamoto Kansai sweater was until Jody Watley mentioned it a few years ago (because SHE had one) and I would struggle so hard to be able to make sense of that part, I would be lip-syncing for my life, and then suddenly I’m like “these women are putting their hands all OVER his Yamaha Motorcycle that *I* parked…” which made zero sense and I knew it was wrong, wrong, wrong, but I couldn’t… Read more »

I can’t possibly count all the songs with lyrics I misunderstood. At least I’m not alone…many books have been written on this very subject. Thank goodness for the Internet sites like LyricsFind, SongFacts, etc.

This is so great, Paul!! It was huge during my time in college. Because of you, so many memories are flooding back to me concerning the music I grew up with. Even though I’m more of a fan of New Wave, rock and synth-pop, I was exposed to a lot of R&B music in college as well. I just love all the music from the 80’s! The variety is so amazing! And the “beats” really took control!! Long live the drum machine and the drum machine programmer!!

Somehow this song escaped me when it came out in 85. I became aware of it when it was parodied by Saturday Night Live. Since then, I became a fan of the song. Thanks for the upload.
