BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
“Love & Pride” is the debut single by Coventry band King, produced by Richard James Burgess from their first studio album Steps in Time (1984). It was released in August 1984 and reached a chart ranking of #84 on the UK Singles Chart in May. When the group performed the song on Saturday morning television towards the end of the year, the single was re-released and became a hit in early 1985, reaching number two in the charts for three consecutive weeks and only being held off the top spot by “I Know Him So Well”, a duet by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson for the musical Chess. It later climbed to a peak of number 55 in the US Billboard Hot 100 in August 1985. Richard James Burgess remixed the single several times for B-sides and 12 inch versions and these fueled the international club success of the single and subsequent album, Steps in Time. The dance mixes of “Love & Pride” pushed it to a peak position of seventeen on the American dance charts. In this song a Prophet 5 synthesizer is used.

Excellent DJ Pault!!! I love this song
Love King and have all the mixes except the Alone Without You mixes from the US 12″. Any chance you have nice clean copies of the 3 mixes?
Hi JPD yes I have the Japan 12″ which has the US mixes will try to post it soon 🙂
Thanks Paul. Your a star!
Good post Paul, King had a rwal good run of singles, don’t know how many of them made it to the US but Taste of Your Tears and Alone Without You were great songs too. A new music museum was set up in Coventry last year, and there’s a large King exhibit in there of memorabilia (including Paul’s green suit!) and artifacts, plus you can listen to early demos of Love and Pride (it has a horrific synth all the way through!) and other rare songs. Plus there’s displays of items and info on pretty much all other Cov bands,… Read more »
That is so cool Jermajesty I would love to see that exhibit. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Do you perhabs know if they have Boy George’s 80’s dreads on display, too? Or did het make his 2013 goatee from that? 🙂
Boy George wasn’t from Coventry, Dirk.
Strange to read the Coventry museum is solely for the benefit of Coventry gents and peeps and their music. I think it might limit their market.
It is a celebration and showcase of music and musicians from Coventry, which it is open to all.
Yeah, sunday evenings (in the Netherlands). Real cool vibes and music, mch more indie than at the regular hours. (And no, we did not make disco and call it hiphop or singersongwriter back then. Just fresh non-mainstream sillyness 🙂
Awesome..
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Ex15 🙂
I always loved this track! Funny, again, I was just looking through my 12 inch collection of his yesterday. Just reminiscing about summer’s gone by. Thanks again.
You’re welcome my friend 🙂

You’re all about Love and Pride DjPaulT!! I was really moved by yesterday’s posting and your and your readers’ comments. There is certainly a lot of love and pride out there and Burning The Ground has got it in bucket loads!! Thank you Paul for all you do and for being the beautiful person you are. You’re a hero to many and not just the music. It’s that lovely personality of yours that permeates the music and presentation.
Jeff
