Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985
“Running Up That Hill” is a song by English singer-songwriter Kate Bush. It was the first single from her 1985 album Hounds of Love, released in the United Kingdom on 5 August 1985. It was her first 12-inch single. It was the most successful of Bush’s 1980s releases, entering the UK Singles Chart at number 9 and eventually peaking at number 3, her second-highest single peak. The single also had an impact in the United States, providing Bush with her first chart hit there since 1978, where it reached the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and featured prominently in the dance charts. Bush also performed the song live for the first time with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd at the Secret Policeman’s Third Ball in 1987. The song’s title for Hounds of Love and all subsequent releases was “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)”.
The B-side of the 7-inch single contains Bush’s song “Under the Ivy”. The 12-inch single contains an extended remix and an instrumental version of “Running Up That Hill”, as well as “Under the Ivy”.
In 2022, the song received renewed attention when it was prominently featured in season 4 of Stranger Things. Its appearance led to the song’s resurgence on charts around the world, entering the top ten for the first time in New Zealand, Canada, and the United States (and becoming Bush’s first top-ten ever in the latter country), and re-entering it in Australia, the UK and Ireland.

Fan freaking tastic Paul!!!
I always love that song. Thak you.
Hey Paul, I was right. “Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)” was indeed used in the series “Pose” too. Loved its inclusion in the groundbreaking series. Miss Bush touches lives.
Jeff
Thx Paul. This song is still in my “all Time favorite” Playlist.
You’re welcome, Toxicaudio 🙂

Amazing, thank you Paul!! What a serendipitous surprise as this song has been on almost everyone’s mind from the you-know-who show. Thanks for jumping on the zeitgeist and putting a smile on everyone’s face!
You’re welcome, I had a blast doing it. It almost feels like its 1985 again 🙂
Paul,
Thanks so much for this gem!
Ecstatic that Kate is getting all this unexpected love she truly deserves.
And please update your chart placements for Kate:
Currently #8 on the Billboard Hot 100
#6 on the Billboard Streaming Songs charts
and #1 on the Billboard Digital Song Sales charts.
Love and light, always!
You’re welcome, Grant. My chart stats are for the original 1985 release.
Thank you
You’re welcome, David 🙂
Thank you so much for this Paul! Kate Bush forever!
You’re welcome, Peter 🙂
Hey Paul!! I, like many of those already, am thrilled to be getting this rip from you. The song is magic to me ever since college. A friend of mine would hail this record as a revelation. And my good friend Tom became a giant Kate fan and bought her entire back catalog. She is such a special artist and person. Love the 12-inch too, although sadly, I never had the chance to buy the vinyl. Thank you so much for sharing this with your community. You are so great to us!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff. I have a greater appreciation for the song now just wish I knew who remixed it 🙂
I’ve loved this song since it first came out, so happy to see it getting some love! Thanks for sharing!

Another thank you very much for this twelver Paul,
especially the instrumental.
Loved this song since i first heard it back in ’85.
And it still packs a punch after all these years,
as evidenced by all the renewed interest.
Peace,
dj
You’re welcome, Don Julian 🙂
Excellent timing, excellent share, excellent song. Very nice to have the instrumental in Paulity. Thanks man!
You’re welcome, Stefano 🙂
Thank you for this, Paul! So much I could say about Kate and Running Up That Hill, but what I most appreciate with this post is the DJPaulT treatment giving us a digital version of the Instrumental Mix. It’s yet to be issued on CD and to my knowledge, can only be found on this 12″. I am heartened that this song is being embraced by a whole new generation.
You’re most welcome, Robert 🙂
I love this so much. It is wild that it has landed in the US top 10 and I guess demonstrates the power of streaming. The B side is also one of my favorite Kate Bush tracks. Great post! Thanks!
You’re welcome, Conner 🙂
This is obviously getting lots of love lately and deservedly so. A cultural touchstone & absolute classic by a true artist! Thanks for the post! I just absolutely love her Aerial album followed quickly by Hounds of Love. Of course her Prince collaborations are also faves. And of course This Woman’s Work is one of the most gut wrenching amazing tracks ever! In all the cover version lists for Running (most don’t stack up – not even close) no one seems to mention Blue Pearl’s a bit more dancey but pretty cool version!
You’re welcome, ING 🙂
What a coincidence! I was on youtube listening the live version from 1987 The Secret Policeman’s Third Ball with Kate and David Gilmour. I like the orginal version… but the extended is even better! Thank you very much Paul!!
The extremely talented and influential Ms. Bush, CBE, was a friend of Pink Floyd and her early EMI signing guided by David Gilmour back in the day, so it’s great to see her appealing to a new generation – as she never toured this continent because of her fear of flying after doing only one major tour.
She does an amazing version of “Comfortably Numb” live with Gilmour worth checking out, as well as her first worldwide #1 hit “Wuthering Heights” (except in the US, of course.)
Meg Myers’ 2019 version of “Running Up That Hill” was #1 on US rock and alternative charts, increasing her fan base.
You’re welcome, Gonzalo 🙂
