Burning The Ground Exclusive
Today’s Pride Month selection is a dreamy, delightful gem from one of the most iconic and unapologetically queer voices in music—k.d. lang. Released in 1992, “Miss Chatelaine” is the second single from her breakthrough album Ingénue (1992), and it’s as cheeky and charming as it is subversive.
The title is a tongue-in-cheek nod to Chatelaine, a Canadian women’s magazine that once named lang their “Woman of the Year” before she came out publicly. With a wink and a twirl, lang reclaims the title in this swooning, romantic tune—drenched in lush orchestration and playful irony. The song playfully contrasts with lang’s tomboy image and silky contralto vocals, creating a visual and musical aesthetic that is both retro and radical.
Today’s post features the shimmering St. Tropez Mix from the 12″ release—a sun-soaked, extended take that brings a relaxed, continental dancefloor flavor to the track. It’s pure escapism and pure elegance, with a sly smirk behind the glamour. The remix emphasizes the song’s breezy, bossa-nova bounce, giving lang’s voice even more space to glide and flirt.
k.d. lang made headlines in 1992 when she came out as a lesbian at the height of her fame. She didn’t just break barriers—she bulldozed through them with grace, humor, and incredible talent. Her courage opened doors for a generation of queer artists, and songs like “Miss Chatelaine” remain milestones in the soundtrack of LGBTQ+ visibility.
As we celebrate Pride, this track is a reminder that authenticity can be beautiful, bold, and even a little mischievous. 💅✨
Here’s to the queens, the rebels, and the dreamers. Happy Pride!

The US Maxi-single has the same tracks as this 12” plus it included the album track “Outside Myself”. The “single version” runs the same length as the album version, yet is a different mix.
Thanks as always for your work, Paul. I love the Ingénue album, and the St. Tropez mix is one of the better moments on the Makeover remix comp from a few years ago. I’m excited to hear this “Paris ’92” mix.
I bought her Ingenue CD and ‘we’ liked it very much, but I’ve never heard any of these remixes. Thanks again, PaulT.
Wow, I had completely forgotten about these remixes! I bought this 12″ single when it came out, but I had forgotten about it over the decades since then and haven’t played it in at least 30 years. Thanks for doing the work to get this uploaded for us, Paul!
This song… this song is a tidal wave of emotion! A slow, deliberate crashing of waves onto the shores of my very soul, each note a grain of sand, building, building, until I’m completely overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and heartbreaking sorrow. KD’s voice is a velvet caress, a mournful whisper that somehow manages to hold the weight of a thousand lifetimes. The piano, a gentle heartbeat against the vastness of the ache in her lyrics. It’s like staring into a bottomless well of longing, a feeling so profound it leaves me out of breath and utterly captivated. It’s the… Read more »
Wow, Jeff—what a stunning response. You’ve captured everything that makes “Miss Chatelaine” so extraordinary. Your words are poetry in themselves—so evocative, so full of feeling. I could actually hear the song all over again just through your description. You nailed what makes k.d. lang such a singular artist: the quiet power, the aching beauty, the emotional precision. She doesn’t need to shout—she breathes, and we’re undone. Thank you for taking the time to articulate what so many of us feel but can’t always express. Your comments always bring a depth to the conversation here that’s just invaluable. I’m honored this… Read more »
Jeff is an incredible writer and captures in words what many of us feel about the music you post, Paul, but cannot immediately express. He could easily write for any of the music ‘zines out there with the passion he possesses. Great work, Jeff!
Ingenue, Is where I became a KD Lang fan. I am really grateful for your write up today, I have always wondered what “Miss Chatelaine” was all about, an alter ego? Now it makes perfect sense, and I have to laugh that I finally got the joke after all these years. This woman could sing the phone book and make it sound nuanced and poignant, one of the finest vocalists of our time. Thank you for another great pick, I missed making any comments on the last few, but they’ve all been great.
Thank you, Joey! I’m so glad the write-up helped “Miss Chatelaine” click for you—k.d.’s wink and playfulness often fly just under the radar, but when it lands, it’s brilliant. And you’re absolutely right—she could sing the phone book and it would still stop you in your tracks. Her voice is pure velvet and soul. I’m happy you’re enjoying the Pride Month selections, and no worries on the missed comments—just knowing you’re out there listening and loving it means the world! 🌈💖
I can’t say I totally forgot this song or the remixes, but I loved that you brought it back to the top of my mind. I now need to go back and listen to Ingenue — an album that k.d. lang must be very proud of.
Absolutely, VanceMan! “Miss Chatelaine” has that magical ability to float back into your head and make you smile all over again. Ingénue is such a lush, heartfelt album—every track feels like a quiet revelation. I’m sure k.d. is incredibly proud of it, and rightfully so. It still holds up beautifully and deserves every revisit. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and joining in the Pride celebration! 🌈🎶
What a nice surprise Paul! I think this totally passed me by at the time. I, like everyone else, loved Constant Craving that was deservedly in constant rotation. And, of course, I loved her duet with the great Roy Orbison on Crying. So, with your post I was expecting another country-tinged single. I had no idea Ms. Lang was taking the diva title to such tongue-in-cheek heights! Very classy of her. I hope she sees your post, as you mentioned she deserves the spotlight as a real trailblazer. Thank you Paul!
Thank you, Retro Hound! I’m so glad this one caught you off guard—in the best way! k.d. lang really showed a different side of herself with “Miss Chatelaine,” and it’s that playful wink to classic divas that makes it so special. She’s often celebrated for her vocal power and emotional depth, but this track shows she had the charm and humor to match. It’s high time more folks rediscovered her early gems. And yes, wouldn’t it be amazing if she saw the love we’re sending her way? Appreciate you being part of this celebration! 🌈💖
Surprised KD Lang didn’t have more hit singles in the UK. The only single to chart was “Constant Craving” in early 1993.
I remember this single getting airplay in the UK, i think Gary Davies played it on BBC Radio 1, when I first heard it.
Thanks Paul.
Thanks, Mark! I agree—it’s surprising given k.d. lang’s incredible voice and artistry that she didn’t score more chart hits in the UK. “Constant Craving” deservedly made a mark, but so many of her earlier singles had that unique charm and elegance that should’ve connected more widely. Great memory about hearing this on Radio 1—love that it stuck with you! Always appreciate you stopping by!
I’ve never heard of this song before but the opening verses and style is VERY similar to Crying by Don Mclean. Thanks for the cool tune!
You’re welcome, Fred.
I adore this track. What a great addition to your list this Pride! Also, you missed yesterday. Is everything ok?
Thank you, Conner! I adore this track too—such a breezy and brilliant Pride anthem, right? 💐 And you’ve got a sharp eye—I did miss a day yesterday. I had a doctor’s appointment, but all is well, thankfully! Appreciate you checking in, that really means a lot. Back in the groove today and excited to keep the Pride playlist growing! 🌈🎶

Thank you. KD is one of the few I think held back by public embrace. Too many good songs and covers.
Absolutely, Daved. KD is truly in a class of her own—an extraordinary voice, immense artistry, and such emotional depth. I agree, she never quite got the full public embrace she deserved, especially considering the strength of her original work and her stunning covers. But in this space, we give her the spotlight she’s always earned. Thanks for celebrating her with me! 🌈🎶
Hi Paul What a fabulous surprise!!! In all those years, have I ever told you that I am a BIG k.d. Lang fan? I love her, I adore her. 🙂 I have all the vinyl albums, the cds, dvd and bd. What I do not have, is any k.d. 12inch. And guess what: Miss Chatelaine is my absolute k.d. favourite. I´m so looking forward to listening to the remixes which are new to me. Thank you so much!
Big hug 🙂 s´n´d
Song And Dance, that makes me so happy to hear!! What a wonderful surprise to learn you’re such a big k.d. fan—how have we never talked about this before?? 💕 I absolutely love that Miss Chatelaine is your favorite too. There’s something so magical and tongue-in-cheek about it, and the remixes give it a whole new charm. I hope they’re a fun discovery for you! Big hug right back! 🌈🎶
